Synthetic gear oil tends to be too slick, which causes the synchros to work slower, which causes the occasional (or frequent) grinding or misshift, which causes damage to the gears. Gear oils with a limited slip additive for friction-type LSDs are not that bad for the gearbox, but not quite as good as the OE stuff.

yeah stick with stock stuff. when i first changed mine out i went with mobil 1 syn 75w-90. it was better than it was cause the previous oil was so nasty, but then about 7000 miles later changed back to stock stuff and the stock stuff worked so much better

The stock oil S***'S I found a lot of metal shavings in my trans after my first trans oil change.
I have used Neo 75W-90 RHD it has worked very nicely.
I do a number of track days and autocrosses and using this oil has definitely made shifting much smoother, BUT it cost $60.00 for a gallon.
I would highly recommend it.

I just put synthetic 75W90 in the rear diffs of my two WRXs. Redline in mine, and Mobil1 in my wife's.
I also have Redline 75W90NS ready to go into the trannies next time I'm working on them. Synthetic with friction additives for the synchros. It's been recommended highly from NABISCO.

so more mixed feelings about what fluid to use. if i plan on getting the oem fluid for the diff, where would i go to find some? should i go back to the dealer to get it, or is there other places where they wont cause too much of a dent in the wallet.
and changing the diff fluid is pretty much the same as changing motor oil right? i just have to add in the fluid in a different area?

yeah there will always be different opinions on what type of stuff to use. it is for all sorts of parts and applications from oils to exhuast to tint.
to mix things up i've been using amsoil syn in my tranny and rear diff for the last year with no problems at all.
you can order your oil online if you do a search. but they should be available at certain car parts store. just call around and ask.
as for changing it yes it is just like changing your engine oil for the tranny. the plug is alittle further under the car and the filler is a small little opening low in the engine so you will need a funnel. the rear diff are the two pllugs on the case. just use a 1/2" wrench to get them out top then bottom to drain. i think the maintenance manual details both changes. if not do a search and you should be able to find it.
similar oil change for earlier year but same idea

I put that combo in my car at 12K miles and am now at 26K. After I changed the fluid I noticed an immediate improvement. The car shifted much smoother and going into first and reverse was much easier. I can't really explain how much better it felt except to say that I found myself downshifting just to feel the difference. I never did have any grinding or shifting issues to start with, though. And now, 14K miles later, it still feels as good as the first day. I still have zero grinding or shifting problems and I can still downshift into first going 20mph (although I don't do it much). Basically my transmission is still shifting better than new. I'm going to change my fluid with the same stuff at 30K. And the best part is Redline fluids are only $8 a quart.
Anyway, that is my experience and I could not be happier.
