I keep seeing these things advertised but I don't know exactly what they are. They are called a "Dog Box" as far as I can tell it is a replacement type of gear set for the tranny. What I don't know is whether the teeth are cut differently, are they just heat treated, what is the deal?

Dog Box= looking like a n00b everytime you shift for as long as you own it. It means that there are no synchros, and the teeth are designed to be larger, which means the are cut perpendicualr to the diameter of the gear, which means excessive gear noise and lots of grinding sounds when you shift, The good part is, no matter how much noise you make you won't really hurt them unless you are running very high boost. High like 25psi+ high.

So basically it is what the rally drivers use right? In that case is it really something viable for the street? The manufacturer says it is but the way you describe it, it sounds like it is way to beefy for the street. Much less the modified daily driver. So I guess my next question is this. What should I look for in the way of tranny's/parts that would make the tranny stronger yet reliable and smooth enough for a daily driver? Am I just asking for too much in one package or is this possible?

Personally I would recommend getting an STi gearbox instead. Almost as beefy, not that much costlier, and WAY easier to drive on the street. Dog-box makers like to say they are 'streetable', but that's not really true.
