Whirring from rear diff

Hey everyone,

I have searched for anything relating to this issue and I haven't found anything.

When I am starting from a stop I hear a whirring from my rear diff. Atleast it sounds like it is coming from the rear. Once I get going the noise goes away. I have no tranny issues as far as shifting, up or down.

Now tonight when I started my car, out of gear, I had a strange water sloshing noise coming from the rear. It almost sounded like water bubbles. I couldn't hear the noise from outside the car; only inside.

Any ideas anyone?

You didn't say what model car you drive (RS, WRX, STi). How long has it made this sound? You might check the rear differential fluid level and the transmission while you're at it.

I've never heard of a sloshing noise from the rear, except when I had the rear cushion out and could hear the fuel sloshing around in the gas tank.

If it sounded like bubbles, though, I don't know what that could be. What sound do bubbles make?

02 wrx. Been making the sound for about 3 months on the whirring and about 1 day on the bubbling.
Sorry for not including that.

As far the sound that bubbles make. Think of a thick past suace simmering on low. Pretty much like that.

Changed the rear diff fluid and the noise appers to be gone.

I was going to say change the fluid, if there is bubbling noise from the front that would be you needing to add radiator fluid, but from the rear, change your rear diff fluid. Hope all is well.

OK, so I have been told by a mechanic friend that the sound could be the rear diff slipping a little bit. I am runnig Redline 45 90NS in the rear diff. Maybe I'll go with the stock non-syn fluid and see what happens.

Also try something rediculously thick, like GL5 and that might make all the sounds better.

if it is making the sound at a stand still it isnt the diff because it isnt moving at a standstill..

water bubbling sound may be from air pockets in your cooling system. it isnt in the rear of the car but that is something that will make this sound.
