The STi 6 speed is stronger than the wrxs 5 speed. I don't believe there has been any reported cases of STi 6 speeds going out yet.

The transmission on these cars are fine. It just depends on how you drive. The STi has a much stronger transmission than the WRX but both are by no means indestructable. If you try to slam/bang through the gears, forcing them to shift before the syncros have done their work you'll kill them irregardless of how much "theoretical" HP they are supposed to hold. The stock WRX tranny has been shown to hold a lot of power and the STi tranny even more. Just remember to keep your shifting and clutch release smooth and the tranny will last a long time. Personally I wouldn't go with more than 220WHP (Vishnu dyno) i.e. 260ish WHP (on other dynos) on the stock tranny, but thats just because of my driving style and comfort level. Hope that helps =)
