transfer case whine ??
After replacing just the front tires on my 2k2 WRX, for a road trip to FL, Ive noticed a whining sound from the transfer case. I thought it was prolly the difference in outside tire diameter, but I took it in today to get the same tires put on the back, and its still making the sound. It started only at about 50+ mph, and now its down to around 40+ and up. I also changed the gear oil to mobil 1 full synthetic. Any opinions on what my problem is ?? Thanks for the help.

Get rid of the mobil 1 gear oil. I had it and it did numbers on my tranny. It eill make first gear grind when you go to put it into first. It is also very whinny for some reason. The problem is that it is too slippery. It would be good for racing where slippery is good but for street where you constantly need the synchros to do a lot of work it is bad. Just my 2cents though.

OK... so which gear oil to use then ?? And Im not sure if this matters but the whine is in every gear when I get up over 40 mph well except 1st, engine is too loud to hear the tranny. Or is it that all the synchros are constantly spinning ? Thanks again for all your advice.

Well I think I have narrowed it down to the mobil 1... Ive read numerous accounts of excessive whine from using the full synthetic. But most just added in a quart of the Pennzoil Synchromesh and it was a night and day difference. So I picked up a quart today at autozone. Now just waiting for the car to cool down to get under it. Thanks again for your help, hopefully this will cure my problems for now.

Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
You might try putting 2-4 pounds more pressure in the front tires relative to the rear. Doing that pretty much eliminates any noise from my center diff - mine was mainly a deceleration noise, though.

I would highly recommend using the recommended stock fluid so long as you are not racing or something. THere is a good reason it was designed and is used in the WRX. It is what the engineeres determined was best and it keeps you safe with warranty and such. I have come to the conclusion that if something was better for the car (aftermarket claims) the engineers would have put it into the car when they designed it...
