Synchro going into 5th
For quite some time, I have had grind in the tranny going into 5th. It started out only happenning at ~ 80Mph + (135 kph for the Canucks), then started to happen at lower speeds. Last suggestion I got from the service guys was wait and see if it breaks in (since like me, they had only heard of it in the lower gears). They did mention a similar problem with the older legacy, apparrently a backend nut not torqued enough. Double clutching, or a good pause in neutral, does work, but what a pain in the ***.
Anyone had similar problems.
One other thing, anyone else encountering a high pitched whistle (sounds like window seal) at higher speeds??
Thanks!

I had a similar issue... the trans would grind under any shift into fifth at over ~1000 RPM. It didn't matter how granny like you tried to shift it, it would not go. The car had not been raced or abused.
Dealer pulled the transmission and replaced fifth gear. Problem solved.

My 02 WRX wagon had ~15,000 miles on it when I started having problems.
They covered the repair under warrenty, so it was no cost to me. From the estimate that I saw, it cost SOA just under a thousand to pull the trans, replace the gear set, etc.
