Question Strange noise in 4th and 5th

When I'm in 4th, at around 3000rpms I hear this strange whinning noise that changes tone as I get higher into the RPMs. It sounds like the pitch change you would hear as you fill a graduated cylinder up with water. In 5th gear the sound is obvious as soon as I engage. In the lower gears I hear nothing. There is no noise when I'm out of gear or in neutral regardless of speed. Could this be a sign of tranny problems?

BTW the car has 50K miles, regularly scheduled maintenance and has always had Mobil 1 in the engine (minus the break-in perioid of course)
Mods: Borla Header, Stromung Cat-Back, N1 lightened pulleys, Ganz flow Intake with K&N

It may be the countershaft bearings/bushings. Which car do you have?

I've got a 2000 2.5 RS. What exactly are the countershaft bearings/bushings?

The countershaft is what transmits power from the input shaft in the transmission to the output shaft, the bearings or bushings that it rides on can go bad or whatever controls the forward/backward movement of the countershaft can go bad (shims or bushings). It's an internal transmission kinda thing, if the noise has been like this for a while and the fluid level is ok then you may be alright, but if you notice the noise start to change or get louder over time, I would have a shop look at it.

I just wanted to know what car you had so I could figure out if 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio on yours (it's not 1.088:1).

FYI: On cars that have a 1:1 fourth gear you can pinpoint the countershaft noise because in 4th it would lock the input to the output shaft, eliminating power being transmitted through the countershaft (the noise would go away in 4th, then come back in 5th)

WRXnifect...

Thanks for the info... Wow is right!

I had the car looked at by a Subaru dealership and they said it was normal transmission noise that occurs as the car gets older. I think I'm going to take it to another dealership for a second opinion.

Sounds like you have the same deal as STi4life, I have a 03 WRX wagon and I think mine is starting to make the same noise as well, and 4th gear is .972:1 on our cars
