There is a TSB that all the dealerships have with pics of "typical" breakages to the 6MT so they can deny warranty due to abuse. I was shown the bulletin at my court case when my 5MT broke, it contained various pics of 5MT with missing teeth, but only a couple of parts that tend to break in the 6Mt. the Rep said it was sent to the dealerships and lied about it being accessable by the public...he continued to say that it was available on their website (which is also untrue) the 6MT can and will break, but its usually the clutch that goes first (unless the clutch is dumped)
have any techs seen this bulletin?

ppl think it is impossible to break because no one has broke it from raw power yet just abuse and it seems to take alot before that happens but it is not wearproof

fantabulous: thanks for responding. I know there are a lot of Subaru employees who dont want to speak out about certain things. I did find a copy of the bulletin, but dont have a scanner to scan it:
warranty bulletin number: 01-156-03
Subject: warranty information update
applicability: all manual transmission vehicles
date:11/18/03
the pictures shown are 5MT with the following common abuse signs:
second gear teeth missing
reverse gear teeth stripped
first gear teeth stripped from main shaft
the only 6MT breakage shown is a 1-2 shift interlock arm broken.

How does a stripped reverse gear amount to abuse???? I mean who the hell goes nuts in reverse?? and we all know that reverse it a pain in the *** most of the time anyways. That sounds like a cover-up for a faulty design. Everybody is always saying that BS "well, it's straight cut and has no synchros..... blah blah blah" Just about every japanese transmission is like that and I've never had problems with getting into reverse like I frequently do with my wrx. Even the dealer was like, "well sometimes you should double clutch or just try again" I was like WTF, THAT'S your solution to my complaint??? Do something in my car that nobody else has to do in their non-subaru? I mean, i know every car has their quirks (base idle set screw in eclipses, tire wear in 350Z's etc.) but that's just a pretty lame one.
Cheers,
Joel

reverse gear stripped should only occur on a misshift, instead of going from 4th to 5th, maybe 4th to reverse...or if you're rolling forward and force it into reverse, you are abusing your car. the SOA rep said that these transmissions can break with only 1 mis-shift, or "banging" of gears. I think my transmission was damaged when I bought the car (it had close to 30 test driven miles on it) the new trans has been in for over 20,000 miles and no problems whatsoever.
yes Reverse is a straight cut gear, so occasionally it will be tough to get into. You really have to compare it to a 4WD transfer case, when you shift into 4WD in most trucks, it tends to grind, because there are no synchros. Its not a faulty design, just an old design +/- 12 years. I believe the 05's are having some transmission improvements, so at least they acknowledge the fact that its time to fix the problems instead of pushing them aside and denying warranty work.
