STi 6MT to auto swap?
#2
Man it is really late. Glad I am off of work the rest of the week.
Never heard of a fitment of an auto on the STi but it must be possible. Why not just buy the regular wrx with the auto option. If power is what you need you can do some pretty reliable mods to get power of a stock STi. It is higly unlikely the dealer would do the swap for you. If you contacted Subaru of America they might be able to do something given your situation. If they did it you'd probably be in the official Subaru Magazine. I'm pretty sure someone will trade you their auto transmission/axle etc for the STi's. They will probably pay all the labor costs as well and even a bit of money.
Good luck.

Wait out for the '06 WRX, which should be as close to the STi as it can get, 2.5l 5EAT, then mod it from there.
Differences would be turbo, EM, no DCCD which is the manual version of the VTD that you'll get with the AT...
That IMO would be the better route to go.

I've read about a company doing this for a handicapped racer in (I think) the Speed Challenge series for his Mustang Cobra. Might be worth looking into, but again, your best bet is an automatic WRX with some mods.

Might be possible but there is no current automatic that has the rated torque capacity of the 6MT. Also, don't forget that the 6MT comes with different front and computer-controlled center differentials than other Subaru models. These may not be compatible with an automatic.
I suggest that you look for an alternative for the STi if you must have a slushbox car to drive unless you have a ton of money and find someone with great technical expertise on Subaru drivetrains.

can you swap the tranny for an auto? i'm in a wheelchair so i can't drive a stick, or i wouldn't even ask.

It's sort of a semi-automatic gearbox that still uses a clutch, IIRC, but uses paddle shifters for gearchanges.
You'll also need their engine management system to control the differentials.
