short shifters

hi, i already did a forum search, and i've come to conclude there's a few brands out there. perrin, Kartboy, oem short shifter. But question is, is there really a difference in which one i get other than the brand/price. is there a difference in how to install it, and also, should i upgrade the shift **** itself also? because the stock shift **** gets on my nerves, i dont really like it. I've seen some momo's that are really nice. Thanks a lot guys

no clue what that shifter is but installation should be the same as every other one besides the STI which comes with the linkages. the other shifters are designed specifically for the impreza for height and gear engagement. so yours will probably be a different height and where the gears engage will probably be some place differen't.

the shift **** is all you. if you don't like it then change it. it is all a personal choice like rims. some difference but not life changing.

Actually, there are a couple more. I know what you mean about the differences of the short shifters though. I ended up getting the Kartboy because...well simply cuz I jumped on the bandwagon...lol...and it had really good reviews. Check this page out though...it helped me out.

And if you want to get a good deal, I got a Kartboy Kit...short shifter, ****, bushings...for $150 w/no shipping charges. Go to Oakos.com. Good luck!

I just put the kartboy kit in my 02 wagon and what a difference. Look in the for sale buy vendors forum and he has some great prices. You have to do the bushing kit with the shifter for maximum effect.

if you want height adjustability and a shifter then get the cobb double adjustable shifter. it can change both throws and height. it cost alittle more but cheaper than buying a shift **** and shifter.

yeah.. I bought the cobb double adjustable cause I wanted the shift **** higher. I noticed my buddys cartboy with the momo air **** (matches the steering wheel) was really short and stubby. "You dont want to be short and stubby now, " I told myself. The cobb shifter was $185 with the bushings so it cost more money for sure. But in the end I have adjusted three times untill I got it just right... cant do that with the others.

While we're on the subject... the STI tranny mount was a really nice upgrade after the shifter. pay no attention to talk of more vibration... it's very minor and kinda cool.

$185

um if you like the stock height then just get the perrin. the throws are adjustable and only $80 shipped. yikes. when i was looking at cobb a year ago it was only like $130-$140. i think the older version was like $100.

185 shipped with the bushings ($30)and it was almost a year and a half ago. It was still worth it. I ended up with the shifter almost two inches higher than stock and the shortest throw allowable by the body of the car. Everyone who's ever tried it really likes it.

Perrin makes good stuff and it's alot cheaper though. I'm just one of those dorks that will spend extra money for a part that's perfect instead of settling for something reasonable that's really close to perfect.

You'll have to make that decision for yourself.

Does anyone around here have the Perrin SS? I want to know how you like it, as I was considering getting it.

Thanks.

i got it and like it. made shifting alot stiffer by itself so i didn't feel like i needed the kartboy bushings. it didn't hurt my wallet and it was easy to install (didn't need to bust out my rubber mallet to pound it in) also by keeping the stock shifter it doesn't pick up any extra vibrations like all metal ones do since the stock shifter has an internal rubber damper.

You can pop it in and out with your hands.... it's not that hard. The bushing install is a little messy cause of grease though. All you need is latex gloves. And trust me it's noticably stiffer with the bushings in a good way and even better feel with the tranny mount. I only insist on this because I did each one a couple thousand miles apart and got a good feel for what effect they each had. The nice thing is you can do it in stages and feel for yourself. The vibration everyone talks about is so minor it's silly... even with the trany mount. It just has to be said because it's there.
