Reverse Synchro
Long Story Short: Just got my 2k4 rex, 980 miles on it, had it for 10 days, makes a knocking sound in reverse. I took it to the dealer and they told me the reverse synchro was broken. They ARE fixing it under warranty, but said that it's just a "One time act of goodwill". They said that in order to do this sort of damage, one would have to accidentally shift into reverse while going forward 25mph or faster.
The problem:
I KNOW I didn't misshift into reverse, I've never done it before, but I'm sure I'd know it if I did. I've been babying the hell out of the car given that it was still in the break-in period. Thus, what the hell else could cause the reverse synchro to break with only 980 miles on the car? Any theories appreciated.
My only ideas:
Maybe that sort of misshift isn't really noticable (bloody unlikely)
Factory defect (anyone else had this problem)
Case Flex screwed synchro up (Is this possible, and if so, what the hell causes case flex?)
Tranny Gremlins.
ANY input is greatly appreciated, I just got the car, I love it, but this is reeeeedikalus.

It had 5 miles on it when I got it and was factory ordered. It had been on the lot for less than 24 hours when I picked it up, and had gotten off the container ship from Japan just over a week before that. I reversed into my parking space the night before, it was fine. Next day, I use reverse to get out of said parking space, and it makes the noise. What's really worrying me is that I don't know WHY this happened.

The WRX 5 speed has no synchro in the reverse gear so if your dealer told you that your reverse synchro is gone they are straight up retards... Take your car to another dealer, I wouldn't even go back there to fill my windshied wiper fluid!
Edit: Because reverse is stright-cut and unsynchronized it is hard to get into, this is common on all WRX's...

Uh, man are you serious? Jeez, yeah, I think another dealer might be required here.... If I didn't break a synchro, what DID I break then, the reverse gear itself (In your opinion)?
I'm not sure where another Scooby dealer is around here, but I'm sure it's worth finding one. I've got a secondary warranty through my insurance company though, so technically I can take the car to any certified mechanic and get it fixed under their warranty, which apparently means that if I can find a local Scooby-oriented tuning shop I can have them work on my car.

I'm confused about what this 'clunking' sound is. If you put the car in reverse and it goes backwards, then it's not broken. Maybe you are really sensitive to the drivetrain slack being taken up? When you first put the shifter in reverse, there is a light mechanical knock from the lockout being moved. Sounds like someone is under the car and tapped the gearbox with a ball peen hammer sort of.

They're telling me it was a "one-time courtesy". People over on NASIOC say that I might have to sign something agreeing to that, which I do not want to do. Has anyone here ever dealt with this "one-time courtesy" thing? Do you have to just orally agree or do you need to actually sign something?

Ok, the saga continues. I asked if my car was ready today, and they said no, and that they were waiting for one more part. I asked "which part?", and they responded "the driveshaft", which obviously was not what I was expecting to hear. Apparently they dropped and damaged my driveshaft during the tranny work, so they had to get me a new one. This is truly the most incompetent service department ever...I am never taking my car there again.
