reverse gear is grinding...
Hey everyone, I just recently purchased a 2007 2.5i, it has 1,000 miles on the odometer. But something strange happened today.
when I put it in reverse, it grinded. I thought I didn't push the clutch in all the way so I just ignored it. But it happened again tonight, and this time the clutch was all the way down. Is my tranny going bad already?

If it grinds, either the clutch is not fully disengaging or the vehicle is not at a complete stop. Reverse gear is not synchonized and will grind if you try to put it into reverse and the vehicle is moving. The clutch pedal should be depressed all the way to the floor.
If you are still having problems, let the dealership service department check it out. It's a new car!

i had that problem at first (like the first week i got my '07)...also a problem i had and still have is sometimes at a complete stop i can not go into reverse...i push the clutch to the floor and i can not physically move the shifter to reverse it's as if something is pushing back, and it makes no noise at all...generally i just put it into first roll forward a tad and then stop and try again and 99% of the time it works right...
god knows what is up with the transmission, i've had the car for a tad over 2mo now and i have about 4500mi on it...seems to be fine everywhere else except accelerating sometimes the car make a deep rumble at about 1500-2000rpm and in 4th just coasting with the clutch engaged it makes a noise i can't even explain

its like wingless wonder said, the reason its hard to put it in reverse sometimes is because its a non synchronized square cut gear.so if there isnt a clear path for mesh u might have to put in first for a second.then it should fall right in
as for the girnding again its like wingless wonder said. most likely your clutch is not full disengaging. but its under warranty so have them look at it

Take your car to your local Subaru Dealership since
your car is new with only 1K miles.Make sure you come
to a full stop when shifting into reverse and it shouldn't grind
in reverse unless their is something wrong with your transmission.
