The real scoop on WRX transmissions
I am in the process of purchasing a new wrx sedan, but I hear a lot of talk about transmission issues. What's the real deal? Is this something that I should be worried about 6 months after I buy the car? Or is it more long term like 5 years after I buy it? I understand that the car goes through a lot of stress with the awd system, but for a normal everyday driver should I worry about having to invest in a new transmission a couple years from now? Thanks in advance for all the help!

this has been covered in detail.
the anwser is this :
if you know how to drive well, the tranny will last a long long time (clutch will wear) - this is tru up to ~300 HP mods

Yeah, the transmission is 'weak' in that it can break if you abuse it (or put too much power through it, which is not really abuse in my book). Don't do 5k drops, burnouts, or whatnot and you should be fine.

one thing about the tranny is tho its tight/finicky when new (like bimmers) - its made well, and with wear becomes super nice (~6-10k miles). Its a little better on '05s they imporved first gear syncros but sometimes there are problems getting into reverse, etc - look in general forums for Double Clutch to get into reverse

It is, for the most part, a matter of "how" you drive your car, the stress and wear you abuse you give it. But I would have to asy that overall, after reading hundreds of pages of discussion on this topic in the i-club and on other forums, the wrx transmition itself is weak and a poor choice for a stock wrx, let alone a modified one. You'll see people with claims that swear they never drove the car hard, never modded it, always kept up pn maintanence, and they are still haveing problems.
Hope that helps, Matt

being the owner of two 5MTs and one 6MT I will agree that the reverse was/is a pain sometimes. The 6MT is great. I have autocrossed my RS many times and it has 60k no issues, clutch chatter is minimal and random, but bearable, and only happens while cold. So take what you want out of that.

I agree, but EVO, look if you abuse anything it is going to break. AWD puts a much larger stress on everything, Rally cars generally launch on loose surfaces, I.e. the wheels spin easily, launching on tarmac day in and day out is abusive on any car!!!! This topic has bothered me for about 5 years and I have to speak out. The 6MT will handle alot but you will break that if you beat the hell out of it, these cars are not Grand Nationals and are not designed for the drag strip. Yes it is fun to see you time, but that does not mean dropping the clutch from 6k, you actually have to learn how to drive these cars. A little slip, remember the clutch is a wear item, the transmission/axles are not, wear out the clutch slip it a little have a nice day.
