Quick answer: OEM Gear oil, Synthetic or Conventional?

Just wanted to get final confirmation that the service advisor at the dealer I had my 60k (04 wrx, 5MT) service done at is a tool.

First gear has grinded a couple of times since the service (and never before, changed fluid with OEM at 30k), so after plenty of threads found on here regarding grinds with synth MT oil, I called and asked what they put in. He said it is 75w90 synthetic gear oil. I asked him to confirm that it was synthetic, and he says, "yes, the same as it came from the factory."

I'm going to go back tomorrow, talk to a tech hopefully, and ask what really went in there. If it was conventional oil, then maybe get them to ride around with me until I can get it to grind again.

But either way, I'll be switching out oil to go with the synchromesh cocktail I've read so much about. Any resolution/experience on how much of the GM stuf to add? I've read 3 oz and 1 qt.

Thanks,
Kevin

So I know it's dumb question, but definitely not the dumbest, right? Owner's manual does not specify synth vs. conv. only the proper grade.

But what about the question of how much synchromesh to add?

I use cheap non synthetic 'Sta-Lube' GL5 gear oil. No grinding(well unless I do something stupid like not use the clutch) now at 59K miles on my 02. Changed it at ~ 35K miles.

Sometimes people will have grinding with synthetic, do some searches. For the cocktail search for Uncle Scotty's cocktail on nasioc or here.

i have been looking around on the net and found some articals saying that rally teams use Neo Synthetic Fluids. but i wonder if you need a friction inhibiter using synthetic.
