Possible wrx owner needs tranny info
I am trying to decide which car to buy sometime within 6-12 months. The Wrx most likely an '05, is on the top of my list, but I can't help to notice all the tranny problems. Yes some will say it's the drivers fault, but even so it may be an indication that there is something wrong with them. If I did end up running into any tranny problems I would most likely replace it with something beefier. It seems the Sti's transmission is doing alot better in terms of reliability from what I have read. So how easy is it to get one and how much do they run? What other replacement transmission options are there and which would be best for reliability? I'm just trying to figure out all the costs so I can make the right decision on what car to get. Thanks for any help.

If you're already thinking about needing to upgrade the transmission, just lay down the extra cash for the STi. You can probably get a pretty good deal on the '04 right now. The cost of the upgraded engine and tranny alone will bump your WRX up into and beyond the STi's price range. Add to that the brakes, DCCD, intercooler spray, interior, etc. and the STi is a great deal.

oh yeah....tranny swaps are expensive as all hell. If you wanted like an RA or STI set up. etc.
Just get an STI.
The trannies have been a problem spot for the wrx since it came out in the states. First it was clutch shutter, now it's sycro problems.
They are for the most part fine for stock cars. Once you start modifying them you are putting yourself at risk with an already problem tranny. I'd get an sti...mod that.
Be more fun anyways...unless you want a wagon of course.
