Drive down steep grades much? lol If you don't use engine braking, you're going to find yourself cooking rotors and boiled brake fluid. It is not good to lose you brakes coming down a big hill. Last time I went to Yosemite I saw a Suburban at the bottom of the grade with a brake fire. I guess Homey didn't know what "L2" was for on his truck.
I agree engine braking is not necessary or a good idea in most circumstances.

Old people should have to take manditory tests every couple years in order to keep their licenses. They are by far the WORST drivers on the road today. I cannot tell you how many accidents I have seen that have been caused by older drivers.

I am not saying younger people don't cause accidents, but at least we are more aware of what is going on...unless on the phone, that is just stupid, don't talk and drive.

My grandpa for example has had catarack(spl) surgery, a triple bypass, is on constant oxygen and smokes(oxygen + cigarette = KABOOM) and he insists on driving his damn 40' bus around on the weekends. Moron!

I used to work as a ski instructor in Big Bear while commuting up/down from Pacific Coast Highway.

The trick to avoid engine braking in downhill situations is to avoid building too much speed in the first place. Avoid gas, and use light braking to keep the car at a slow speed (<40mph).

I constantly saw people gassing it on the straights only to overbrake like mad before a turn. Most people under estimate how well their cars turn and overbrake going into turns then stomp the gas coming out only to find that they've gained too much speed for the next curve. Repeat for 25 miles and 5000 vertical feet = cooked brakes.

Just because I am a young whipper snapper 1/3 your age who can still get it up doesn't mean you have to try to prove something. Besides what does my age have to do with my knowledge of cars? I was simply stating fact that the majority of the older people driving should not be. Take it as you will, you don't have to agree.

His question was: How is your first reply to this thread relevant to this thread? If you read all of the posts in this thread previous to your first reply, you came right out of left field and it was completely off-topic.

It is actually illegal (at least in the state of GA) to coast along in neutral...

So I'm not 1/3 your age, but then again you never gave me your age so I generalized. For the record I am 24 and have been trying in one form or another since I was 12. Maybe you still have been driving for longer than I have been alive, but in no way does that have any bearing on who might be a better driver. Look at most of the F1 drivers, I am sure the majority are closer to my age then yours. Anyway, What matters here is you obviously feel offended by what I said...that's your problem. Get over it. You're on the way down the hill while I am still making my way to the top. I truley hope the grass is greener on the other side for your sake. I am finished. Sorry for Hijacking your thread.

PS. Nowhere in this thread did I ever mention I coast in neutral
