Car Info: Mazda Protege '02 (Wishing protege has AWD and a H6 twin turbo)
Never got to drive one but some autos have stupid locks.

One such common lock is the brake pedal lock which has been on some cars not sure for subaru.

Another may be simply low fluid levels. Check them.

sound like you have a shift lock solenoid circuit problem.first have you spilled in drinks into the shifter area.they will leak onto the solenoid and gel up to keep the solenoid from working.also check brake switch adjustement.use the shift lock override to see if it will come
out of park.if it does then you know it is a fault with the shift lock system.if not more that likely a problem with gear selector or main valve in valve body or cable.

shift lock

on page 7-18 of your owners manual it will explain the simple steps.in short.use a flat bladed screw driver to pry up the shifter bezel that is around the shifter lever base.there will be a slot on the most forward postion of the shifter base.use your key to insert there and press down.then you can shift .
