I just changed my tranny fluid (every 10k miles) and I do it all the time with Mobil 1 Syn. No problems whatsoever, and I am at over 40,000 miles already. Everytime I do it, it shifts as smooth as butter. Everyone has their opinions about what to use, so I would recommend to try what you want and contribute back.

I get first gear grind too.. well kinda like a grind you would get when you shift into reverse while the car is still moving.. It happens once in a while.

So i try not to shift too hard on first and if I feel it start to grind i just ease off

The grinding thing! I grinded first gear if I don't put the clutch all the way down.
Or, If I go from 2nd gear to First, it grinds even if the car is moving really slow or barely moving at all .. somethimes. I don't think its meant for subarus to go to 1st gear from another gear no matter how slow the car goes.. ..
That's just what I noticed.. . . I'm not sure if i'm the only one having that problem. (maybe its just the way I drive . .. let me know if you guys are this problem too)

You don't need to change it more often than 30k.

Do NOT use standard Mobil 1 tranny oil, it is not right for Subaru transmissions. There is a product called "Mobil1 SHC" that is the right stuff. Its rather hard to find, I know Rallispec carries it.

You only need to change your tranny oil every 30k. I do it every 15k. I used Mobil1 and it didn't work out well at all. I am using the stuff they use in Jeeps right now. I forgot the exact rating on it but it is slightly more viscous than the Subaru stuff but it doesn't have any friction modifiers. I am probably going to go with some synchromesh next time.
