Legacy Clutch Slipping
I think the clutch on my '00 Legacy GT is toast. It started slipping after I pulled out of a parking space on a steep hil last night. Immediately after that, under heavier acceleration above 3000 RPM in 3rd gear or higher, the RPMs would rev up about 750 RPM before reengaging the transmission.
I am not aware of any adjustment that would correct this situation.
Has anyone experienced this situation?
Has anyone gone thru a clutch repair, what was the cost, etc.

What mileage does your 00 have? I'm almost at 100k, but a large number of those miles were put on by the previous owner commuting, so i think i have a bit of time.
Clutch replacement is probably going to be between $500-700, if not more. It's a bit involved to get the transmission out of the way and get to the clutch, so there's a fair amount of labor cost involved.

My '00 has 76500 miles. Some of it is driving in and around the hills of the San Francisco Bay area. I have never engaged the transmission on a steep hill without the smell of an overheating clutch. There is also a pretty pronounce clutch shutter sometimes when the car is cold. Not sure if that is related, I have seen it written about on the forum here and other places. That started when the car had about 35000 miles on it.
I admit that I used to drive the car pretty hard when I first got it, but I have been relatively easy on it since about 40000 miles.
I am aware of the effort required to take the clutch off. I called the dealer this morning and the technician agreed the clutch is hosed. He said it would be about $1200 - $1500 depending on whether the flywheel needs replacing or not.
Oh well
Any other thoughts would be appretiated

I'm sure that there are a number of competent shops in your area that can do it for far less than the dealer is quoting. It's possible that the clutch may have been misaligned from the factory, and the shudder situation doesn't help either.
I'd be surprised if the flywheel would need to be replaced, but that's a possibility. It's probably time to do some recon on good shops for a replacement.

i've got 151k on my stock clutch. it works fine, and i don't drive carefully. it slips if i start over 3500 rpm, and it shutters when cold. both of those are pretty normal. i'm looking to upgrade in spring. look for a little higher clamp load, 300-350. pedal effort will be a little higher, but it will feel basically stock. i found a kit from exedy for $299. the problem is installation. look around $400. as for diy, good luck. awd clutches suck. anybody done one? a buddy of mine f&$%'d his up pretty good.

Exedy is the manufacturer of the OEM Subaru parts, and i've used both their clutch and flywheel in the past. As for install, it should really be done by someone who knows what they're doing.
