Let's talk about your modification budget. How much do you plan on spending on the engine mods alone and then how much is allowed for a new transmission? Installation of the RA gearset and transmission removal/replacement will probably run you at least $2500.

Is the new car drivetrain warranty of any value to you? An engine modified to that power level will void that portion of the warranty should your car suffer an engine or a drivetrain failure.

Have you given any thought to how your car will pass bi-annual smog inspection once the grace period goes by? Any WRX with that much power will surely fail the visual inspection before it even undergoes the sniffer test in California.

It's not so much the horsepower but the torque generated under full-throttle and hard shifting that breaks drivetrain parts. Even with 400 whp or ft lbs of torque at the wheels your tranny could take it if all you did was drive the car to work or school while shifting very gently and accelerating at only 2/3 throttle. But you sound like a person who will take that new found power and beat on it pretty hard.

Drag racing at a drag strip with good traction on the starting pad is hardest on the drivetrain. Road racing is also hard on the drivetrain if you go to track days often enough.

Just get the RA cryo-treated gears installed by a competent shop and that should be able to cope with most of the abuse for any reasonable amount of engine power, unless you really thrash your vehicle. These gearsets are often in short demand and backordered so don't expect to have this done in a week unless you've made advanced arrangements with the shop performing the work.

Of course, you could pay more money and pick up a low mileage STi 6-speed tranny, axles, and rear diff, and have them installed but it gets to the point where you would have been ahead just to buy an STi instead of a WRX when you start putting so much money into a new car.

you dont need 350 whp to beat v8s. 300 wil be enough, and yes: cheap/reliable dont mix. you gotta pay to play. good luck.

read up

research on Nasioc.com. They have some good information. Best bet would be an upgraded 6 speed or ppg dog box. There are already a handful of Ra' gears being toasted with 300-350whp. SOme techs say that Ra gears are not much stronger than 04+ oem gears. But if you beat on anything enough it will break so who knoes.

My ra's are holding up but I'm nowhere near 450whp......

some would say ppg's stink.

I'd say RA gears or full STI tranny swap is the only way to go. RA gears shouldn't have any problems holding 300-350whp.
