I just blew my tranny!!
I was gonna get new tires so I decided to go crazy in a parking lot to wear out the old ones but I ended up stripping first gear and or damaged my clutch. Does anyone know how much it would cost for a repair? Has anyone else damaged their trannys? If so please post your experiences (price of repair, what happened, extent of damage, etc.) It would be a great help to me. Thanks.

I'm not tryin to be a jerk or anything, but when you "decide to go crazy in a parking lot to wear out old tires", I'm assuming you're trying to do a burnout, which WILL NOT happen in a AWD car like the WRX. You are just killing your tranny instead. This car is NOT a Camaro, you can't just dump the clutch and smoke up tires for fun. Hope you learned your lesson.

My car's got 28000 miles and since the 1000th mile on the car I've had an upgraded turbo, intercooler, etc. I've been boosting at 18 pounds ever since, without upgrading the tranny. I've been expecting this and actually yes I do dump the clutch and drift alot and I have fun doing it (note: I dont drive like this around other cars). I dont baby my car because it can handle a lot of abuse. I don't want to start a flame fest because its all that ever happens on this board. I wasn't trying to complain about the tranny because to me they have more than proven their durability. I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this to their transmission and find out what they payed to have it fixed so I wont get shafted. I decided to actually buy a low mileage tranny from a junked WRX (much cheaper than a 2000 dollar estimate I got!) Oh and as to the damage to my car, I didn't hurt the clutch, I just stripped first gear. I thought an aftermarket clutch actually causes more damage, BAN SUVS, however it makes for a better drive when you have a highly modded engine.

Tough luck, I think you can drop new stuff (gears) into the tranny, go to WRXworld.com and look up the time when they replaced the tranny in Jeff's car before he got the Sti-RA eng&tranny swap. There are some good pictures in there. You can also get beefier internals which should help allieviate breakage in the future.

My GTI-R could do some nasty hard launches. It also didn't break as much as a Subaru.
Look into getting a 6spd M/T to replace the old 5spd. Its kind of a big swap cause you will need a few extra pieces but so far it looks like its built to take the abuse. After 10yrs of the same M/T problems it seems that Subaru has found a solution.

I'm a consumer lawyer representing a 54 year old mechanic who is suing Subaru since the first gear in his new WRX stripped off some teeth at 3500 miles and Subaru refused to replace it under warranty claiming owner abuse. They claim he dumped the clutch or downshifted from 5th to 1st at freeway speed (impossible without damaging more stuff). Anybody else experience this problem? Other than abuse, any potential causes of this problem?
