grinding in first

i have a 03 wrx, and every now and then when i try to put the car into first, i'll grind the gears. i'm not sure on why... it happens at random times, from a complete stop. i could just be a a light, put the car into first when it turns green and it'll grind. i let off the shifter, try it again and it's ok.

any ideas on what could be causing this? should i take it back to the dealer?

thanks for any ideas.

Most of the trannys do this occasionally. Let your dealer know that it is happening so that if you have tranny probs in the future soa will be more likely to replace. My 1st tranny did that alot, mine now does it about once a month.

also i grind first when i try to put it into first gear RIGHT after i step down all the way on the clutch....seems like it's ogtta be a 2 motion thing

then u slowly put into first.

car isn't new. got about 19k miles on it now.

i just find it odd... i mean, a car shoudln't be doing something like that at all. i'd like to think that subaru would try to fix the problem (because it is a problem and i don't really want my gears to be grinding like that). other than changing the tranny, is there a way to fix it and would warranty even bother fixing it? shoudln't they if not?

what zuffy said. the clutch's response seem to be slow, so u have to step on the clutch....then SLOWLY put it into first gear or else u'll end up just grinding it. dont know why, but subaru transmissions really suck i think

There is a synchro for 2-1 shift, it's just not very good. Reverse is a straight-cut, non-synched gear however.

mine does that all the time, i just say oh well and deal with it. my warrenty is up anyways so no bother trying to get it fixed. i figure that when my tranny goes that just means its time for a sti 6-spd

my 1st gear is also hard to get into, i always have to come to a complete stop or rev match.
