Well basically is it the same transmission as we get here, fitment wise? I have the option to pickup a JDM MY01 WRX (non STI) wagon tranny in mint condition for pretty cheap and would like to know if anyone knows if it'll fit?

It will fit. I am not sure what the final drive ratio is on it though. But it will physically fit.

Thanks for the replies.

Does anyone know if there is anything else we will need with it to make it work on a US spec WRX that we are cobbling together?

If the final drive ratio is not the same which I am pretty sure it isn't, you will need a ring and pinion for the rear diff.

The US tranny has a funky 3.52 or something like that for a final drive. There is a reguction gear in the rear housing of the tranny.

The JDM one is probably 3.9 or 4.1.

it will fit wagon and the final drive is the same. You just need to bult it in. Now the 02 European is the same. Down to every gear.

Same tranny...as Alex stated, but, if the center diff is a 1:1, then you are going to need a rear 3.90. If the ratio is 1.1:1, wich I am almost certain it is, then I have a feeling that it is the same. Once you find that out...then you will know your answer.

Mike, how much are they asking for the tranny...you should be able to move it easily because of all of the broken trannys!

No, I am 100% certain that they are the same! The 6MT is the longer housing, so it has the shorter driveshaft...trust me!

The 2003 WRX wagon in Japan uses a 4.44 final drive and I thought it used one in 2001/2 as well but I'm not 100% certain. They generally received the shorter ratio gearboxes along with Australia. You can click Here to see the specs on the 03 JDM Wagons.
