Clutch Shudder Warranty
#61
While waiting for my car to warm up, it would sometimes give a nasty vibration. It would also give out the nasty vibration even when the car is warmed up already. And while driving, shifting from first to second, the car would jerk. Is that suppose to happen? Are these symptoms of the "clutch shudder" defect in the subarus?

i had my car in this morning for a tranny problem and was talking to the mechnic
he said that the clutch/flywheel on USDM cars basically sucks and is not equivalent to those on JDM...the shudder is the problem that has occurred...so essentially the new cluth/flywheel is the same or similar to the JDM...bigger springs or something (i know jack about these parts)
i guess this came about after an owner got really pissed when he had the shudder and SOA refused to fix it under warranty...so he wrote a bunch of letters, order the JDM part and fixed it himself, wrote some more letters and SOA finally admitted there was a problem

I've got a 2000 Legacy GT, and I used to have the shudder problem, but it hasn't happened in a while.
Unfortunately, as of today the cluch has started to slip. The car is just short of the end of the drivetrain warranty (59,504). I don't think that it's worn out due to my driving style, since I've got a lot of miles driving manual transmissions and never worn one out before.
In looking at the warranty infomation, "wear items" are exempt from the drive train warranty, and this includes the clutch disk.
I've got an appointment to drop the car off monday, so we'll see what the word is. But I'm wondering how do maximise my odds of getting the work covered under warranty.
Any suggestions on how to present the situation to the dealer?

Guys, I just got my windshield and clutch replaced under warranty with no trouble. I may have just been dealing with a great dealer, but it was painless as possible.
I cracked my windshield about two weeks ago, and it was stress crack from the top, so they had no problem replacing it. One PIA part was though that I had to leave work early one day for the SOA regional rep to look at it and approve it for warranty repair. It was worth it.
The cluth shudder syndrome start happening about a week ago at about 15K miles. They looked up the TSB, and got a new clutch in too.
I am a very happy Subaru owner right now. Good luck to anyone havng trouble getting their dealer to do the work.

this is a service bulletin only, it will apply to 2.0 wrx turbo's
and 2.5 outbacks and foresters- a good idea is to be honest with your dealership when talking with them-for they are the real deciding factor as to if you will get it or not, faster or slower.there are many reasons why you might not get it but more than likley you will get it--try calling Anthony at South Coast Subaru he is a straight shooter and will try to help most people-just dont lie to him , he will not take kindley to that. but he will be more than happy to try to help you as much as he can....a great guy
714-689-2103....also dealership will have to confirm problem so plan to take your car in just for a quick test drive to confirm problem

Well, here's the story from my dealer on my 2000 Legacy GT
with the clutch problems:
It's worn out; replacement is not covered on the drivetrain
warranty, since it's a "wear item" - cost: $900. I said that
I'd never worn out a clutch in 60K miles; the service guy
said that the AWD puts a lot more stress on things. I've
read this elsewhere, and it some sense to me, but I would
think that Subaru would design for it to get the clutch life
up to at least 100K miles range.
It needs head caskets - it's leaking coolant. This was
a big surprise to me. Fortunately this IS covered
on the drivetrain warranty
They also found that it needs brakes ($420), exaust work and
misc. other things that were not surprising to me, given the
mileage and my driving.
So the estimate is $1900. Seems kind of steep to me; the
car is only three years old, with less than 60,000 miles.
Is this kind of cost typical?

well for starters do you have an extended warranty contract from subaru of america??? gold contract being the best..--as far as the dealer --yes he is correct-- but the oil leaks are covered under warranty based on 5yr or 60,000 miles from day of delivery...do you have any documentation stating that this was a problem before?if so this will help your case...if you do have an extended contract "gold" the flywheel will be covered by the contract..in this case you will qualify for the update because it is a related repair and the new update clutch would need to be installed..every dealer across the u.s. runs their dealers the way they feel works for them..if you have been an excellent customer with the dealer you can always ask them if they can goodwill the clutch--this will need dealer reps authorization before the work can be done-------if you can get me your vin ## i will check with my buddy at subaru to see what you qualify for---good luck

Took my car to A&T Subaru over in Sellersville, PA - had some very good recommendations from some local people. They were extrememly friendly and pleasant to deal with. I have very little "engine" mods done - silencer removal, K&N drop in panel filter, samco IC hoses, and lightweight (NOT underdriven) pulley. They had no problem with those mods, and rightly so (IMO) -- they looked the car over, took it for a test drive, ordered the parts, and I took it over there last night and left it for them to work on today. They called at 3:00pm to say the car was done, (I even asked them to do a state inspection, since I'm due, and to address the window squeaking on the drivers-side window, which they did in addition to the clutch/flywheel/throw-out bearing/bolts, etc...) Total cost to me was $79.00 (inspection/emission, etc...) so when I go pick it up I'll try and get a copy of the parts list and anything else that may be able to help you guys out. And I'll also give my .02 as to how the car drives.

For anyone that's still interested, a picture of the TSB has finally been posted here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=328971. The parts were put into production with the 03 MY, so it only affects those prior (it says 99-02 2.5L and 02 2.0L). Why 03impreza2.5rs's car was built with old clutch parts, I have no idea.
