Automatic fluid change
Ok i have an Automatic Tranny with a Hayden 403 cooler in the mail for a 2003wrx w/4000miles. never touched a subaru tranny so...
1) is it the same process to change the fluid on the automatic as it is on the manual???
2)do i need to replace the filter too?
3)Will 75w90 mobil1 work well and how much do i need compared to the manual?
4)I plan on doing the front/rear diff at the same time. is this the same process too and will 75w90 mobil1 work also?
5) do i really need to remove the IC or will a long funnel work?
6) OT: seeing how im installing the hayden 403 too which type of coolant to use and how to add?
I know this is a lot but i want to tackle this sometime this month.
im looking at scoobymods for the instructions too.
thanks, eric

Re: Automatic fluid change
1)Nope. Hopefully your owners manual says a little about it, other than "see your dealer."
2)I can't think of a good reason not to change it, but it's not absolutely necessary.
3)NO! You must use the same grade ATF that OEM is. I think it's Dexron IV ATF? Not sure, I don't fool with autos much... The manual will list exactly what you need.
4)Rear diff will use standard 75W90, I'm not sure if the friction modifiers are required- haven't figured that out yet since I haven't done mine. The front diff should be seperate from the rest of the transmission, unlike the manual. It should use 75W90 too, unless it's integrated to the gearset and uses ATF as well.
5)Ummm... funnel should work, but removing the IC will almost certainly make it easier not to pill anything.
6) I think the cooler uses the ATF in the case already. You should just need a little more.

I think you are a little confused about the whole install. The auto trans uses regular automatic trans fluid, not gear oil i.e. 75w90. When you install the trans cooler it uses air to cool the trans fluid, not coolant. What you do is run the trans fluid through the cooler and then air hit the turbulators on the cooler, and it cools the fluid, no coolant needed. You really don't need to change the trans fluid to install the cooler though just add some to replace the small amount that will come out of the trans lines. To add trans fluid you have to put the fluid in the dipstick hole which is on the driver side of the car. If your car only has 4000 miles on it, you don't need to change the fluid in any of your diffs or your trans, so I don't know why you want to. Just install the cooler, and add a little trans fluid.
