You'll need more than a transmission... Whenever I see someone ask this question, people usually respond saying that it isn't worth doing the swap $$$-wise. In any case, it would be helpful if you said what year/model car you have.
I'm also stuck w/ an auto... I decided to mod it anyway, and get some experience w/ working on subarus before I eventually get a 5-speed (or six??? -puts pinky to corner of mouth-)

I'm not the expert, but I believe the AWD system makes it a little more difficult... I think you'd need a rear diff... but I'll let someone else who is sure answer your question.

www.protorque.com sells upgraded torque converters for WRX's.
also, the standard mods for 5MT wrx's also give good gains on the 4EAT wrx's. I'm at 40k miles with a VF34 and all the supporting mods and engine management. I have all the teeth on my gears.

It can get pricy, but from everything I've read the bell housing on all same style impreza's/wrx'x is all the same size/bolt pattern. If it's something you wanna do yourself I'd say it's definately possible, but if you want to take it somewhere and pay someone to do it, that's when it gets more and more expensive. You would also need all the linkage, the clutch pedal, shifter and whatnot. From what I've heard the linkage is the hardest part, I've been looking into it myself, but have still not decided. Anyone know what the auto tranny is rated at HP wise?

The swaps gonna be pretty expensive!
I'm trying to do the swap to a 5 speed!
what i'm trying to do now is sell my auto tranny, for mb $1500 - 2000 cdn, and the 5 speed w/ all the supporting accessories will cost around $2500 cdn, so if i can sell the auto tranny first i'll just have to bite on the $500 - 1000cdn lost

i heard it can get pretty expensive and there are a lot of parts. unless you get a good deal on the 5mt why not wait a lil while and go for the 6mt? the 5mt is kinda iffy sometimes.

Tranny, rear diff, mounts for everything, clutch pedal and linkage, shifter and linkage, ECU (everyone forgets this one), possibly some extra wiring too... Its rather complicated.
