93 1.8l stuck in gear?

Hi everyone. I bought a 1993 4 door 1.8 L as a project/ parts car. It came with a carbon hood which I put on my coupe. (Pics can be found in ongoing projects section) The reason I am posting here is the car starts perfect everytime but seems to be stuck in gear. I think it is a very high gear maybe 3rd or even 4th. I have gotten under there with my dad and looked to make sure everything is connected properly. To our knowledge everything looks good, although we are not really tranny people. I would much rather work on a motor. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions on what it could be and what to look out for.

have u tried just pulling it out of gear with some effort?

well the shifter is loose. I am not really sure what gear it is in. Just pull the shifter rod from underneath? Sorry new with trannys.

I would say maybe the detents are either worn in the shift block, or theres a clutch issue maybe to much free travel in between the throw out bearing and the pressure plate.

jam007 may be right about a broken shift fork. If that's the case, no amount of fiddling around with the shifter will do anything. Shift fork is inside the transmission case. A reputable shop will visually inspect everything else once they have the case opened up, to make sure that a broken piece didn't damage anything else while the car was being driven. It is possible for a broken shift fork to break cleanly and fall out of the way and not chew up gears or synchros. This happened to a car I used to own and the 3rd/4th gear shift fork was a known weak point of that particular transaxle (fwd transmission). Dealer ordered the part and replaced it in a day.

Hey bro if u got the tools and resources to do it, I would it could save u alot of dough, but this could be a hit or miss diagnosis so, if u have the girth than go for it. For me I rather do my own wrenching save some money, or go buy the book for this im sure they have one out and read up on it....Good luck bro

Hell yea I got mad tools from my dad pretty much everything. And a big garage I am always down to wrench and learn more too! Pics are in ongoing projects under my 1997 impreza thread I will keep you guys posted! Thanks.
