5MT Questions and Answers....
Hey all.... I'm from the SVX forums and from my profile you can see that I have an SVX... I am getting ready to do the 5-speed conversion to it... That is probably the most talked about and wanted MOD in the SVX community... However, after reading some of the posts here I have become a little weary about the 5 Speed Tranny..... I just have a few questions for those that know alot about the tranny..... I am getting a 2003 WRX Tranny with 3.90 final drive.....
--The cost for us to convert a SVX to a 5 Speed is approx. $3500.. (Kit from smallcar.com)... To get the Auto rebuilt it is atleast that... My main question is, Would you put the 5 Speed in anyway???
-- What exactly is so bad about the tranny's???, Why do they fail???
-- Is there anything that can be done to prevent excessive wear on the tranny??? (fluids, driving style, diffrent clutch)
Thanks for all your help!!!

umm...
what 5 speed are you going to be putting in? Once from a GC8 or WRX?
From what I have researched, most of the people that "break" their trannies are putting down TONS of power (300+) and dragging their cars.
If I were you, I would search for the 6MT thread written up by Imprezer...and possibly go that route. I mean, if you are going to do a tranny swap anyway, why not spend a few extra dollars and get something that will stand the test of time, not to mention some extra juice.
just my .02.

i.

gotcha...
so you would be using a transmission from a GDA or GGA (WRX sedan or wagon, respectively). I suppose it could be mated to a SVX...but am not sure how it would hold up.
Here's a link for ya...that might help determine if it's right or not.
Manual WRX Tranny

PS - A GC8 is the older model impreza, from MY '93 - '01.

the wrx tranny is 'alright' but not the best ive driven...
Problems/dislikes im having are:
1. reverse tends to grind unless you are completely stopped even if you slide shifter into 1st before sliding it into rev.
2. some times hard to shift lever into 1st or rev when stopped.
3. clutch shudder if i screw up an engagement.
4. shifter stiff and hard to slide gear when cold (sub 50F)
5. 1st and 2nd gear ratio is very far apart so spin down wait time is long.
6. when i pull 2nd from 2500rpm to redline and try shifting up into 3rd, the shifter grinds, so need to double clutch shift up.
7. since clutch engagement is close to floor, need to really concentrate while i slip and engage 1st gear from a stop.
What i like about the tranny:
1. much better feel at the gates with a sure feel that
is in gear even before the kartboy short shifter than other
MT's ive test driven (less RSX, S2000, BMW).
2. clutch full engagement is close to floor on mine (02) so very easy to do fast downshifts.
3. still works. 19k miles
