5 Speed is a BIG Mistake
Subaru should at minimum make a 6 speed available. I mean the Audi A4 and the new Volvo V40 come with a 6 speed, smaller indirect competitors like the VW Jetta and the Golf offer a 6 speed. I would be willing to pay even $500-750 more for the 6 speed. Otherwise the car is fantastic. No charge service for 3 years/36,000 miles would seal the deal for me. Just my 2 cents

I'm really curious, is the transmission layout of the legacy's different than impreza lineup? otherwise, the 5spd would have the same problems that the imprezas have when exposed to this much power.
Somebody get back at me w/this one please.

I don't agree!
Having driven both the STi and the Forester XT (same basic engine as the Legacy 2.5GT), I can tell you this much...
There is no need for a 6-speed for the 2005 Legacy 2.5GT. The engine on this car will have a broad enough powerband that you will not need such close ratios. The extra cost, weight and time wasted shifting one more ratio, is completely unjustified!
However, if the Legacy GT cane with a normally aspirated 3.0 from the Outback, the 6-speed would make sense in order to keep the revs high.

You are missing the whole point, I don't care what the powerband is I want a real deep overdrive 6th gear. The point being is that every car in this class comes with a 6 speed, even cars down one class have a 6 speed option. If you've ever had a 6spd you know what I mean. I doesn't even have to be for free, I'll pay the extra $500-1000 for it. Otherwise Subaru will have trouble drawing non-traditional Subaru owners to this model. Also with a deep 6th you can make the other gears close ratio, which will make the car real responsive in all gears.

No disrespect meant here but it seems to me that nobody here has any marketing experience. When 6 speed comes standard on all the competitive models and even multiple down-class models you had better make the offering. There is a distinct comparison disadvantage right out of the box. I know Subaru loyalists might not care but if Subaru is to attract new buyers from other direct competitors like Audi & Volvo, even VW from a down class perspective they had better make the missing options like the 6 speed available or atleast bring the Legacy STi by late summer early fall and make everyone aware of it coming by early summer.

Really tall 6th gear (like .070 on 4.42 R/P) probably isn't a good idea for engine response, esp. with a turbo.
I think the WRX 5th is waaaay too tall for a 2.0 turbo.
IMHO
The engine will probably lay down with too tall a gear.

as often as sti drivers. i mean the car's target age is slightly higher than your sti buyer.
just a thought

i'd greatly appriciate a tall final gear to save a bit of gas...but close ratios are fun, i cant decide...i'd like a 6 speed with ratios in 1-5 about the same as a tranny from an NA impreza but an extra tall cruising gear for 6th, that'd be great...and now for somthing completely different

not a lot of people buying legacys are looking for a sports car... a select few are.. but most aren't...so spending the money to design a 6-spd doesn't seem too important yet..
at my dad's dealership there is one person whols looking to get an '05 GT... but considering we still have an '03 on the lot and the '04 still hasn't arrived.. almost every legacy sold here has been and will be automatic... my uncles legacy had to be brought in from ontario just so he could get a 5-spd

Waaaay too tall? The WRX engine is turning 3500 rpm at 85 mph in 5th. Why would you want the engine to be working harder than that for high speed cruising?
