4EAT Owners Only, A Question
I have been reading these forums for a while now and have seen a number of people with the 5spd's complain about problems with them. I want to hear from 4EAT owners only, as to what, if any problems you have experianced with the tranny.......Most interested in the WRX's but any impy or legs will be fine. Please make sure and state what type of car it is/was and aprox how many miles were on it at the time of the problem.
Thanks.
Thanks.

43k miles on my 00 RS and no problems. Smooth shifting and no quirky stuff. Sorry, you're not gonna find many slushbox owners with problems Although, there was one 4EAT WRX owner who blew his planetaries at the drag strip.

I've put 20k on my 4eat WRX wagon with no problems on the trans or the car in general. The 4eat does have glaring weaknesses though. Upshifts too early, down shifts too late and it steps in too soon on tire slippage. I missed out on a big opportunity by not getting the manual. Maybe I'm missing out on problems too, so I'm content with this tranny for now. If anyone can get better performance from the automatic please post the experience!! Good luck.

If your looking for performance info in relation to the 4Eat, search the forums some, I know I have read some threads on this, Most seemed to recommend changing/up-grading the torque converter as a means of performance enhancement......I guess it really depends on what kind of improvement you are looking for. If it is more of a change to the "shift-points" of the auto, that may be more of an ECU(?) issue then the actual tranny.

I've got a 4EAT MY00 RS and had to replace the tranny at about 30k. I added a tranny cooler at about 20k. There were times where I would shift it into drive and for some reason, it wouldn't engage. Dealer replaced since it was under warranty, but they were blaming the cooler.
I was told by a former Subaru technician that it's some sort of design flaw, however rarely shows its face, therefore Subaru doesn't really address the problem. If/when it arises, they generally don't hesitate in replacing it. It's just that in my case, since I had a tranny cooler, they got all over my ***. Fortunately, for every reason they gave against the cooler, I was able to counter.
Unless you're a hardcore racer, I wouldn't worry about it. I know a guy w/ a 91? 4EAT Legacy who's approaching 200k and never really took care of the car. It still runs fine, and the only major thing he's done is have the engine rebuilt at 135k.

My 4eat has 62,000 miles on it and preforms like when it had 2 miles on it. Subaru machanic at my dealer said 4eat is almost bullet-proof but, of course those who put brakes on and rev to max rpm and release brakes will have more problems and they pay for it. eddie

I have an 01 4EAT and it started slipping a little at 6psi with an AVO kit, so I added a LevelTen valve body upgrade. (already have a Protorque modified high Stall torque converter, Hayden 403 tranny cooler and autometer tranny temp gauge. It works very well now, the shifts are very firm, beating M/T WRX's off the line is not a problem with brake launching
