trans

I have 13000 on my 04 and no problems. First was tough to engage at a roll when new but either I don't force it now or its easier...
Put amsoil synthetic in it and it helped. I put kartboy bushings and short throw shifter and now I love it. Bushings made a huge difference.

I have got grinding when engagin first on two occasions; both times I shifted just slightly before fully engaging (disengaging?) the clutch...so my fault.

So how is the shifting now with the bushings and synthetic? Is smooth and precise? Worth the effort and money?

Yes, definitely worth it. The trans lube is only about 40 bucks and the shifter bushings 30 or so.
Great value.
Don't hesitate to do the bushings; it makes a big difference. I used a solid shaft shorter shifter from subydude and the whole kit feels great.

I have about a little over 11k miles on my 2004 WRX, it has stock tranny fluid and bushings, but I did install a short shifter. The transmission seems A-OK. Just give the transmission respect as you would any other transmission, and there shouldn't be any problems. Also, as with any other car's transmission, you get to know the quirks as you drive it more, and you just get used to it and adapt.

04 tranny

My 04 has 8200 miles on it. Last week i had it dynoed at Mastro Subaru here in Tampa and i put down 249hp and 261TQ. Ive been pretty worried because ive heard of all the problems older WRX's have had but my tranny seems fine. I take it to the track and race it across the bridges in the bay and so far i havent had any problems so i think i may be allright.

Thumbs up

I have an O4 with 22,000 miles on it. It's my daily driver/autocrosser. I have the STi short-throw shifter...that makes ALL the difference to get those gears in without resistance. Sometimes reverse and 1st gear at speed like the others mentioned..I think that is normal. Do you think I should change my transmission fluid often? I think I will, especially since I autocross..

Yeah, it's a good idea if you're driving it hard. I would go synthetic if it were me.

I have about 7000 on mine wiht no trans problems. I autocrossed it for the first time yesterday and shifted a few times from 2 in 1 while rev matching and had no problems.

I've experienced the same problems as stated in this thread. I think if i changed my transmission fluid, that might help. How often are you supposed to do that?

Same here, I have had this problem since I bought it. But to me its not that big of a deal. I have 23,000 miles and no problems.

All 03's and 04's have a sneaky little clutch slave cylinder that does not allow people to "dump" their clutches. It does help to prolong 5MT's life a bit, but it also reduces the "clutch control" factor.
