2004 WRX's: Any Tranny Probs Yet?
Most of us have heard the rumors that the 04 WRX's have beefed-up transmissions. Has anyone had any trouble with theirs yet?
Mine's great so far!

same trans as the 03. I beleive they have a new 3-4 gearset, but only because Subaru changed to a different manufacturer (or so I was told by a very honest *sarcastic* SOA rep) and even though I have an 03, my new trans has 18,000 miles on it and is fine. the first one almost made it to 4,000. go figure! It did pop out of 3rd gear once, I'm probably going to buy some shifter bushings to hopefully prevent it from happening again.

Catastrophic mainshaft failure, somehow related to reverse, with less than 1000 miles on my 04. I have no idea how it happened. SOA said the only way to have caused that kind of damage would be to shift into reverse while previously in a forward gear at 25+ mph, which I'm damned sure I didn't do, as that's a pretty monumental screw-up, and when you do something like that you notice it. I was tempted to get metallurgy done on the shaft for manufacturing defects when they mentioned they might not pay for it, but they did end up paying for it. No problems since, 3k miles and counting.

I've gotten into the habit of going down to 2nd, then up into 1st. I don't know if it does anything to "allign the syncros" as I've heard, or if it's just voodoo, but it's smooth 90% of the time, even when rolling. when it doesn't want to go, double-clutch it and it slides right in!

Unless I am going less than 5mph my car will not go into 1st gear if I am in 2nd..3rd..etc It just won't go into it.... My gf's jetta can be put into first ANYTIME...
Why is this?
03' Rex btw.
Thanks,

my 04 has a little over 3500 miles on it. at first it wouldn't go into 1st at any speed. but now it seems to be getting much better. also reving the engine while in neutral and foot of the clutch then pushing clutch in while shifting to first helps a lot.

from a roll 50% of the time it wont go in and i have to put it on 2nd because there are cars around me. when i do put it on second i dont gas the car enough and the car jerks.
when it does go in from a roll at 10 and under i have to keep on shaking the stick and trying to jam it in. it doesnt go in smoothly.
230 miles and counting

No problems at all for me, I don't mind the little trouble in getting into first, I've had that in almost every car I've driven, Honda Civic, Acura RSX, Nissan Xterra. So the shifting to first doesn't bother me. I like the gear box on my subie better then the one on my old civic, that box felt like i was going to break it everytime I shifted, I like the solid feel of the subie box.

04 tranny in the shop today
I've got an 04 with 9000 miles on it and they are nearly all highway from Vermont to Philly.
Here is the rub...after crusing at 75 to 80 miles and hour for acouple of hours, I hit the everpresent toll both. I stop the car, put into neutral, pay the toll. This takes at least 80 seconds as I always collect my receipt for business write-offs.
I then fully depress the clutch, shift into first and about 50% of the time it grinds. This is absurd for such a new car.
Overall this gearbox is the worst feeling I've ever driven. This includes VWs and Hondas.

I have 13,000 miles on my 04 and have not had any problems. I have already taken it into some moutains and towed a car out of the mud and the tranny is still acting pretty good.
