2004 WRX Transmission whine after 4k rpms

Hey guys,

I need some input. About a week ago now my tranny started making a loud wine when under loud in every single gear. I haven't tested 5th but it does it in 1-4 for sure. When I put it under loud/WOT, at about 4-4500 rpms the noise starts and stays until I shift. What are my possibilities? I've guessing its not a gear since it's happening in multiple gears, so possibly a bearing? What bearings? Is it one of my diffs?

I'm new to learning about transmissions so please be thorough and act as if I'm a complete idiot LOL.

Thanks!

my bad. not what i meant. what i meant was: based on the info you provided, it did indeed sound like a bearing. IDK what bearing. just by what you state, bearings tend to whine/squaek at a consitant RPM. have u check you fluid levels? when did you replace tranny/diff fluid last?

ahhh. I checked the fluid level in the tranny, have yet to check the diffs. I purchased the car at 69k miles and just hit 90k, I haven't flushed any fluids other than standard engine oil. Just topped stuff off. I have reason to believe that the engine was put together and all parts were new like the timing belt, spark plugs, fluids, brakes, rotors, the major stuff.

good stuff. ya take a look at your oil. and just remember u have a transaxle. so your diff and tranny will share the same fluid. this is tru for me at least (RS). located on right (passanger) side of tranny a bit lower.

You could also have a drive shaft bearing or even a wheel bearing going out also... I wouldn't be so quick to jump to the transmission... buddy had an 08 making the same noise at higher rpms and we found out it was his front passenger side drive shaft

yeah.. its probably not the tranny. I just jumped the gun because I know how hard I drive my car and how crappy the tranny is in it. Its most likely a simple exhaust leak between the ehaders and block, uppipe/headers or turbo/uppipe. It only whines when I'm in boost and its an obnoxious, annoying as hell, whine.

i dont recall there being any bearing in the half shafts that would make that noticeble of a whine. id say check wheel bearings. jack car and from every (diameter point, one hand across from eachother) grab the wheels and give it some wobbles back and forth. do that all the way across your wheel. if you feel a difference in bearing play, your wheel bearing is going out.
