112 mph 98 legacy
Many times has my 98 legacy hit 110 but today I was driving and I took my car to 112. At exactly 112mph the car makes a jerking motion. Its not a rattle or shaking, its more like a learning how to drive stick forward and back. I decreased my speed to 110 and it was fine, picked it back up and exactly 112 it began to jerk again. Any ideas what this is? governor perhaps?

Probably the computer cutting the engine at 112. I know someone who described this to me before and it sounds like the same thing.
Ive had my 00' Legacy to 120 twice with no such issues, not sure it top speed is limited by computer or wind drag in the 00' and later models. But I do know it just couldnt manage faster than 120. I had it at that speed for about 2 miles at Bonneville in Utah, both directions.

i have a similar 112 problem... but i don't think its a problem because i don't get the jerking motion. my 95 legacy basically "tops out" at 112, i can't seem to get it to go any faster. i would like to increase my top speed but don't know how. any suggestions, besides getting rid of the governor?

I have a 97 GT that has been to 120 a couple dozen times, no fuel cut out.
What you describe sounds like a computer controlled fuel cut out.
What model/ engine do you have (ie L/2.2)?
What you will find is manufacterers put cut outs based on the speed rating of the OEM tires. S rating gives you 112 top end by tire, so the cut out is put at 112 so the car does not outperform the equipment.

i have an auto 99 gt, and ive flatland needled it many many times probably at about 130-135. i dont really know since the speedo only goes to 125. but anyway, the problem sounds like your governer, im guessing you have the 2.2l, you can get chips online, or at some tuning shops ive heard the you can get them to reprogram the chip somehow, im not exactly sure cuz im not a mechanic, but i think, maybe, you might be able to replace your chip with one from a 2.5 gt. this would probably take care of the governer problem, but might cause engine problems because the chip is made for a 2.5 litre engine, talk to someone else though, dont takr my word for it

You need a torque chip. There are two kinds. Can't remember off the top of my head...leaving work after this post. But one I thik it's PROECM POWERCHIP2 and JC SPORTS TORQUE CHIP.
They both go for about $250US new, prob. a lot cheaper used.
Personnally, I don't see the need to go that fast...

mkwired,
There is only one place I know I could go 110mph or faster in my 97 Legacy Sedan GT and that is at a dragstrip. I would also make sure my tires are rated for these speeds. If this is where you do it, great. However, I'm not sure what your Dealer might say considering he worries about the warranty on your car, if it has one. Many years ago, my friend bought a brand new 1968 Dodge Charger which had a 426 Hemi. This engine was rated at 435 hp and upwards, and by God, 150mph with the correct differential gearing was no problem. He took it out for a test on the interstate. The next day he is complaining to the service manager where he bought the car that the car had a slight vibration. After about 10 minutes of discussion, the service manager asked "at what speed does this vibration show up?" My friend answered, "right about 132 to 135mph." The service manager looked at my friend and said, "just get the hell out of here."

my 98 gt goes faster than my speedometer!!!
really though, the speedometer only goes to 120 but the needle keeps going past there, i only went so the needle was straight down and i still had a little rpms left...
i dont think its supposed to do that is it?
