EJ22T/EJ20 hybrid Q's
What do you guys know about this build? I need something VERY reliable. Something I can build, get passed BAR, get passed smog and then put an 18g XT on. My goals are moderate. I'm hoping for something in the neighborhood of 280-300 hp/tq on 91.
I am trying to figure out what I need to get this done. I figured out that the started hole has to be tapped out and not to use STI rods. LOL. THat's about it.
I figure my heads will need a complete rebuild so a mild cam may be in order. Very mild.
Advice. Links. Etc.
I have a 2.2t in my shed that belongs to someone else. If this turns out to be the way to go I may have to buy it. Until yesterday I was pretty locked in to doing a stock EJ257 long block swap.

Why couldn't you get a 2.5 hybrid passed inspection? Lots of people already do.
You can reach your goals at a lower rpm with the bigger block. Guess it would come down to where you want power. Both builds would be able to handle the power.

20 heads are way cheaper and if mine by chance are useable they'd be a better more reliable fit on the 22 than the 25.
Mainly I'm just looking for info on a reliable set up.

Why do you need to pass BAR know 10 plus people that all have swaps done and pass smog with no issues. The only time you need to go to BAR is if you want them the know about the swap. A built block has nothing to do with smog, I have larger cams, no tgv's, and a 30r and still psss. If you are on a stock turbo and intake when you get your smog you will pass just fine. I have been to smog 2 times since my built engine that I had done at EQ and I have passed smog with with lower numbers then a stock 2.0 wrx. Skip bar if you stick with a TMIC and that 18g you will never have issues.

Great information.
The BAR issue is more related to doing a complete swap. Up until yesterday I was very heavily leaning towards doing a complete V8 STI swap. ECU/harnesses. Whole 9. In that case it seems like the proper thing to do is go through BAR.
Now I am looking in to the possibility of doing a built EJ22 or EJ257 block with my heads and ecu and flying below the radar. I don't have huge number goals. I want a reliable 275-300whp. I am the type of guy that gets it set up and leaves it. I am more of a suspension type of guy. My current motor has 204,000 miles. Most of which with the current set up.... Perrin cat back, PnP manifold and cross pipe, SPT intake. That's it.
So the jump to a 22 or 25 with an 18g is huge for me and I am not the kind of guy that is going to get a taste for the extra 100hp and say I want more. I've driven 4-800 hp cars before. I have no desire or need to do it with my wagon. I want a build that will do the next 150k as close to as trouble free as this one has... with more power. LOL.

I'm just gathering information. It's an unfortunate character trait of mine. I will research the ever living hell out of something before I pull the trigger. I hate spending money... even when I have it. And I HATE spending money twice.
When I bought my WRX I knew more about it than most sales people. The guy I bought my car from is a forum member and an awesome salesman though. He got me pumped up and let me test drive in some twisties. LOL
