EJ20/25(carb'd) into 1989 Legacy DL FWD
hey does anyone have any knowledge on the above swap ?
im considering just waiting and buying an RS however my current car i acquired for very cheap so would like to make use of it.
I dont really want to spend over 2-3g for engine, swap, exhaust and if required new tranny.
Any help would be appreciated

when you say carb'd do you mean that legacy you have is because if it has the 2.2 in it in should be injected and that means you can piece together a turbo kit from factory cars and ebay parts
if you can do the work your self it will not be as expensive as if you have a shop do it because 3k will get you a good system
what is the weight of that legacy?

at the moment i have a ej18 carbed in it.
my car was recently was hit by a rubbish truck unfortunatley so i am not sure if the swap will take place.
no idea on weight but i am thinking a carb'd 2.5L quad cam into it. again i have yet to read up on the existence of such an engine but if anyone knows a good donor car it wud be appreciated.

look on the block because you might have a ea81 i think thats it but i dont think it is a ej18
what you can do is buy the ea81t and build that up
could you get a pic of the engine bay?

it definatley says EJ18 on the block behind the alternator
yeh il work on getting a pic cud be a while tho
unfortunatley still no word from the police about the rubbish truck that re-parked my car for me so i dunno if this is all gonna happen
the subie bug has bitten tho so i think perhaps an RS with a EJ25T in it next?:P

Well yeh now i see your point, i cannot find anything on a 1989 subie DL FWD with an EJ18 apparently it is sposed to have a EA82(?).Will talk to previous owner as he swapped the engine before i bought it so it could have been done by him
STILL no friggen word on that damn rubbish truck im getting pissed off about this...
Still im working on the car on/off whilst its on the jack, usual easy crap (oil pressure, tacho, water temp gauges). Sigh on the other hand i have started saving for an 91 RS
Oh Well the battle continues

This is confusing
WHat is your car again?
DL or Legacy?
I dont think there was Legacy DL and Legacy was born in 1990 I think
EJ18 never came carbed and it is only on Legacy and Impreza
From what you say, it looks like you have DL with EJ18, which is not supposed to be on your car.
and carb on EJ18, which again not to supposed to be there...
but it's great that its working like that
I think your previous owner had a sick project to swap EJ18 block onto DL.
If so, since EJ18 is already on it, you can swap EJ22, EJ25.
You can even put turbo on any of them if you know how to properly tune the carb.
There are tons of exhaust manifold, turbo, intercoolers that people are taking off from WRX.

the ea81/82? is the 1.8t from the older subys that has forged pistons and forged con rods and closed deck
i heard of a rx turbo that is making 350hp and it only weights 18 or 19 hundred pounds if i remember
when you say saving for a rs you mean 01 not 91 right?

no idea
"Subaru Legacy DL 1989 "
thats what my vehicle registration plate reads, and the badges on the car support that so i dunno :s
I disagree that legacy's came out in 1990, mine is the 1990-1995 shape (must have been one of the first built in the new shape) and i have seen another shape of legacy that is older, hopefully getting a new control arm tommorrow so it should be driveable again although tonite i found that i have a problem with the engine, missing and spluttering on sudden acceleration in neutral. Probably the carb as it looks damn dirty.
Does anyone know a good easy place to tap into the cooling system for a water temperature gauge, admittedly i havent looked to hard but i was wondering if anyone knew of an easy place it would be appreciated.
Talked to the previous owner and no major swap was done, the old (carb'd)EJ18 was removed and a new one put in. He gave me the old carburettor to.
Any idea's on a donor car with a ej20 carb'd in it :O
Nah i mean 1991, im friggen poor !!!

A carb'ed EJ25? I guess you could slap a Weber sideflow carb on there or something, but It'd be interesting to set up.
You could also go with any other modern Subaru motor and run something standalone like a Haltech. I beleive Haltech requires only 11 wires to run a subaru motor.

Some of the non-us first gen legs were carbed, and did come with smaller engines like the ej18 and such. There was one somewhere from south africa with a carbed ej18. Looked wierd but they do exist. If it was me risky, I'd keep it carbed. That's a rare subaru indeed and to convert it for more power is like bleh . Also as with just about every other subaru release here we were a year behind on the legacy's aswell. They were started with MY89 everyplace but here.
