97 L at/mt swap, also wrx swap
i'm looking to swap in a manual in my 97 L, and would like to keep the same final drive (4.111), so what manual trannies does subaru offer that have that same final drive?
also..what sort of wiring problems am i looking at when i get the rest of the parts needed for an ej20 swap together and start that process?

Well for the transmission, i've seen it done in a recent article in Grassroots motorsports (they made it sound quite easy believe it or not), im gunna try to look for it so i can give you an answer on that. Im not sure if theres a usdm transmission with that drive made anymore, you might have to buy an older jdm style. I know gruppe-s.com sells tranny's, idk if that helps. The wiring for the swap will be chaos, absolute chaos. So find someone who knows what they are doing to help you out or you might be busy for a while. You'll need a wrx wiring harness, a wrx ECU, as well as wiring diagrams. If you have a trailer that would be pretty key as you will probably need to have the car sent to a specialist. Sounds like a very fun project, if you have more questions go to www.eastcoastswappers.com they know thier stuff!

thanks for the reply. yeah i've seen their site. they have good info there.
i was actually wondering specifically about the wiring hassles found when swapping an ej20 into a car that's already had an at/mt swap, if there are any. i'm sure somebody has to have done what i'm doing before..

Car Info: 00 RS w/03 WRX drivetrain
the wiring diagrams are key.
actually, the entire manual for both cars is necessary.
I did this a couple years ago. you'll definitely need the wrx harness, ecu, patience, and beer.
The wiring is easy but time consuming. you can lay it out in the living room and label everything, and then bring it out to the car to get soldering. THe pain in the butt is having to tie the wrx harness into your existing L harness.
As for the tranny: checkout www.car-part.com They might not have a 4.111, but you could score some good parts for cheap.
The best piece of advice I can offer, is to have all your parts ready to go before you swap. Buy EVERYTHING up front that you know you'll need (fuel pump, 02 sensors if you care about 'em, MAF, air box, etc...whatever your engine didn't come with). This saves you a lot of down time.
The auto/manual swap is a fun one...good luck!
