yeah no issues with the tophats.
I thought about some different ways to modify the strut to make it work, but if i did so it would probably make my front end very difficult to align properly. so im just going to hold off for a while on the fronts

Just elongate one of the bolt holes on the front struts without making it wider. Doing so should make it fit without causing any alignment troubles...they key is to be careful not to make it wider.
I don't recommend using stock struts with STi springs, or with any springs other than stock for that matter. Matching spring rates to damping rates is pretty important. Stiffer != Better
You could always do a drivetrain swap to 5x114.3 hubs

and i agree matching damping rates to spring rates is important, but not crucial. my front setup will work fine for now, being that its only temporary.
drivetrain swap= something i would love to do but not in my budget right now.

this is funny i just did the same thing on my 02, got the rears on fine. The fronts the bolt spacing on the 05+ knuckle is 3" and on our cars its 2.5".
Which i didn't find out until i started my install.
so now im just running the 05 sti springs in the front with my stock 02 struts, and the 05 sti struts and springs in the rear. Looks good and handles good too so im happy for now.

Top hats are not the same.
How can you suggest elongating one of the holes...on a load bearing suspension component...in one breath and then comment on the different spring rates being bad for struts?
BTW, 95% of all struts with 50K on 'em are nearly worn out.....
