Gm owning Subaru?

Ok some guy in the drive through told me he bought his rx8 instead of a suby because gm owned subaru and he wasn't sure if they were reliable because of it. I was like This isn't true is it? The gm owning subaru part. I'm sure they own a little bit but definitely not all.

No no no...

GM does not own subaru. GM had like a 25% stake in fuji heavy industries, which makes parts for subaru ( look at any stamped metal plate in your car) until toyota swooped in and bought that portion

But Gov't motors does not have subaru under its ever shrinking belt. GM owns about as much of subaru as they own toyota.

None

Furthermore he bought an rx-8 because it looked cool in the fast and the furious, not because he did his research. And not only did he buy a mazda he bought a ford...

I can't hate on the Rx-8's, i do very much like their looks, and rotaries interest me greatly, but nothing beats a boxer rumble and the awd handling, even on safe and sane drives Hell i do not even have boxer rumble, and i still preach about it.

As for gm owning Subaru or any stakes in it, thank whatever higher power you follow that they do not, with the "necessary" problems my father faces on his 05 Silverado, i would cry if it were true. Half the time i look at gm parts, and i can only think of three letters, WTF??

Yeah I'm not gonna lie when he said that I was like oh god no, and then my thoughts went to how he could pick an rx8 over a wrx. Don't get me wrong I was considering an rx8 for a little while, but I wanted the power of my car and it sounds soooooo much better, even though it has elh. As for gm owning subaru, I was literally gonna cry if it was true. I have a thing against gm. But i've always thought subaru was independent. It was one of those comments that was so off the wall I thought I should ask before I said anything to him. So I just told the guy that subaru's were reliable and mine was even heavily modded. And faster than a stock sti. (didn't mention that it would whoop his rx8's butt) It makes me mad when people hate on subies.

Even if GM had more to do with Subaru it wouldnt be bad. As said Mazda was owned my Ford when the RX8 was first built. Ford is no longer with Mazda, Mazda is on their own for now.

Haha I wish I had pulled up next to him. . . then he could've heard it too. I was working on handheld at innout, and I pointed it out to him after he said he almost got one. My car looked lovely sitting in the lamp light all shiny like a picture.

I'll just leave this here....

(that's real by the way, well in India it is...)

Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) Share Holders History:

From 1968 until 1999, FHI was 20% owned by Nissan, who acquired the stake in 1968 during a period of government-ordered merging of Japanese auto industry firms in order to improve competitiveness under the administration of Prime Minister Eisaku Satō. During their ownership, Nissan was primarily interested in its bus manufacturing division and lent automaking expertise to Subaru. Upon Nissan's acquisition by Renault, its 20% stake was sold to General Motors, but GM announced on October 6, 2005 that it will sell 8.4% of the company to Toyota and disposed of its remaining share, 11.6% of the company, on the market.[2]

On April 10, 2008, Toyota increased its stake in FHI to 16.7% and announced the end of minicar production at its facility in Gunma Prefecture. Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota, will instead supply the cars to FHI.[3]
Since GM did have a 20% stake in the company, they took the Forester and sold it as a Chevy in India. I think the fact that there is a Subaru branded as a Chevy is what is throwing the guy off.

As far as build quality and such, Subarus are made by Subaru (FHI). Nearly everything in a Subaru is unique to Subaru. I say nearly because there obviously was the one night stand with Saab that created the Saabaru, and a few of the controls in my '09 Impreza are far too similar to the crap in my mom's '10 Prius.

That's jacked they pretty much ripped off the forester and took credit for subarus work. I saw the new prius' interior. . . the position of the shift **** looks kinda funky.

GM does NOT own Subaru in any way. Toyota currently has the biggest stake in Subaru ownership (acquired from GM )...hence the rumors of the "toyobaru" awd 300hp celica wrx coupe thingy.

Rx8's are great when it comes to handling....i'm not very impressed with stock power though.

How about the old rx-7tt???
