if you are talking about a straight line then there are the obvious choices Z06, 5.Slow, anything pretty much with a V8, but if we are talking about what is faster then a WRX running around backwoods roads then nothing comes to mind other than the new EVO maybe.

Someone was talking about a Monte Carlo SS and how a WRX could beat it. My friend is a mechanic at a chevy dealership and he says that the Monte Carlo SS with the 3.8L is pretty damn fast. but he did say that a Ponitac Grand Prix GTP came in to the shop one day and the it had been redlined a little to much and one of the pistons blew into peices. another vehicle that could whip a WRX is a GMC Typhoon or Syclone. 4.3L ic/turbocharged

I spent a day at Bondurant racing school in a Mustang following a Crown Vic around a race track. Of course, the instructor driving the big sedan was a much better driver, but he could hustle that thing around the track very quickly.

Ive drivin a Police crown vic and Marauder. They are quick, the Marauder was faster than the Lansing Police Vic. Neither were supercharged. I was actually looking at buying a Marauder over the WRX. But then I thought "why not get the faster one?". Out of the three WRX wins with the Marauder's V8 screaming trying to keep up, and the Vic with its lights and sirens behind hoping the red flashing lights will stop us. Besides a 1996 Impala SS is faster than both big Fords.

Got a chance to read this thread and got something to say.
Many compared stock WRX to stock American cars and claim that WRX be smoked. The comparison could be true but that can never be used to assess the engineering of WRX. It's an import car and we dont' get too many choice(in fact, only one choice until recently).
Read the official STI's website and you'll find tons of specially tuned WRX's and Legacy's, all making well over 300hp(though the official words always claim 280hp, but we all know this is just a mask. The cars have exceeded the 280hp limit long ago.
So what is really stock? Why compare stock specs? It's just a level of engineering/tuning where the car makers would say, "okay, we should stop here. It's good enough for our sales purpose."
The stock spec can be far from the engineering limit of the car. Comparing stock specs of import and domestic cars is absolutely irrelevent since there's a difference in the availabilities of tuned stock cars.

See, we can't survey every engineer's effort inside each manufacturer so the only way to measure a certain car's "completeness" or its "competitiveness" is to look at their pricing as the measurement for how much resources the car maker has put in the R&D of the car.
Now, you compare a 24k WRX with sub-40k's? That is too far a comparison can be. Comparing with other sub 28k's would be reasonable in this case.

95 and lower Mustang GTs had 5.0L V8 (pushrod)
200-220HP flywheel
96-98 Mustang GTs beginning of 4.6L Mustang (SOHC 2V)
215-225HP flywheel (restrictive intake on heads)
Cobras almost 300HP flywheel (DOHC 4V)
99+ Mustang GTs distributorless ignition 4.6L (SOHC 2V)
260HP flywheel [PI heads got the extra power (police interceptor, crown vic)]
99&01 Cobras about 320HP flywheel 4.6L (DOHC 4V)
03 Cobras about 400-420HP flywheel 4.6L (DOHC 4V super)
The deal with the 03 cobra is many are dynoing stock 360-390 rwhp. Like a turbo car, small intake and exhaust mods easily boost the power. The aftermarket manley forged internals make upping the power relatively easy. Many are around 500HP with under $2000 in mods (intake, pulley, exhaust).
Of course, an all around independent suspension car designed for that suspension with AWD will do better in most road/rally conditions.
I see alot of people on here saying beat a GT no problem. It is fairly close in the 1/4 with the WRX AWD launch, but the AWD is also the factor that slows the WRX down on top end versus a RWD or other 2WD vehicle. One of the first mods many GT owners perform is a rear end change. Late models go from a stock 3.27 rear to a 3.73 or 4.10. Those with power adder aspirations often go with a 3.73, cause the torque with N2O, super, or turbo is too much for 10inch wide Rear tires to hook. N/A guys will go 4.10s for max torque amplification. One guy with mostly suspension mods has his N/A GT doing 12.4 in the 1/4 with a 4.30 rear end (dynoing only ~260 rwhp). He is the extreme case, however, and his car is in no way suited for any type of speed around curves.
I come here to learn as much as I can about the Subarus cause I am contemplating purchasing one in the future for a fun all weather car. I prefer the STI over the EVO cause of the DCD, super sport ABS, rear and FRONT LSD, 6 spd gearbox, boxer motor, etc. I prefer the subaru horizontaly opposed 4 cylinder over the transverese 4 cylinders that the FWD cars and EVO have. Makes for good weight distribution and low center of gravity.
Again, I wasn't flaming or anything, just trying to get some good info out to everyone so you can be more knowledgeable about all cars. And for s**ts and giggles, here's a neat Supra video:
