Pontiac GTO

What do you think of the new 5.7 liter V-8 rear wheel drive Pontiac GTO?

Personally I think it's sad and pathetic. For God's sake it has an f-ing 5.7 liter V-8 with 350 hp/365 lb-ft torque yet it does 0-60 in 5.3 sec. I mean for crying out loud the thing must way a ton. A stock STi can whip it by almost half a second and the factory WRX isn't far behind. If you're going to revive a legendary American muscle car at least let it live up to it's name. It's a travesty when a ricer with half a brain for tuning can easily make a Honda that can beat a so called V-8 "muscle" car in a 0-60 race.

it hits 13.0 1/4 time, for a $32,495 msrp car... not too bad... but id agree with u that its kinda sad. ofcourse the EVO and STi are the better bang for the buck. the problem with v8's is that they need slicks to get good launches.

I think its cool for what it is. Watch the video of the Holden its based on from Top Gear, that may change your mind a bit.

its always gona be cool, its a v8, just not too impressive for an 8cylinder when 4 cylinders are doing the same or more damage.

I think it picks up right where the firebird left off. There is no doubting the LS1 engine and drivetrain. Its extremely strong and tunable to huge horsepower levels.

The one problem with this car is that its really heavy at 3821lbs. That's why it turns 14 flats instead of 13.5s. It isn't much of a looker in this initial iteration. This is clearly due to GM and Pontiac wishing to make it as profitable as possible as soon as possible; thus keeping most of the Holden Monaro's styling. I imagine in a couple years it will get a styling remake.

This is a big, smooth, fast GT. Hard to compare it to some screaming, bouncing Honda or to a 4WD sube. Different animals altogether. Too much focus on numbers these days.

AGREED. So much of a car is driving experience. For example the car guys who drive mini's. By far one of the most fun cars to drive and yet they dont even have 100hp (in fact, I think they only have like 60 something). Thats why I like watching movies and reading reviews. And if you are going to focus on numbers, look to track times.

It's a sorry excuse for a legendary car. They could of at least used a different platform. It's a freakin GrandPrix! Gimme a break.

It is not a Grand Prix. It shares absolutely nothing with the Grand Prix platform. Zero. Nothing. Its faster than every Goat ever made save perhaps the 3 carb 389 4 speed or one of the 400 Ram Air Judges with drag-ready everything. It may not leave a Z06 in the dust, but what does?

Exactly. Only the beginning with this car here. The Monaro platform is definitely more advanced than the dead F-body, plus it has the additional coffers of GM Aus behind its development. Expect a 400hp version within 3 years or so.

Indeed, each to his own. I too would pick an STi if given a choice between the two.

3800lbs. of RWD can be an awful lot of fun though......woo hoo!

Personally I think the GTO is a great car. Yeah it may not post huge numbers but it is surely respectible. Plus if you read the different car mag reviews it does very well. I can't remember which one exactly pointed out that it may not post the best numbers but as a street car it is remarkable. Yes I also like the STi and it may be faster but the GTO has one thing the STi can never have. The ability to do monster burnouts and that V8 sound. Plus I give big props for Pontiac putting out a car that I would actually drive. Before the GTO and the CTS-V (the caddy with a Z06 engine) the Vette was probably the only American car I would wish for.

why would u wanna abuse ur tranny with monster burnouts?

burnouts are only useful for warming up the slicks before a drag race. burnouts are to gain better traction.. something AWD has already.

the STi will have something the GTO never had, DCCD, driver center control differential, can u say RWD mode?

ever hear an STi catless open downpipe? sounds krazier than a v8! lol
