If Porsche gets 400+ hp and tourqe out of a 3.6 Twin Turbo and yet is reliable, I don't know what the problem is. Why create a whole new engine when you can use the same engine out of the Carrera, and put on a pair of turbos and do a few other minor changes that give it more than enough power for the streets.

Our personal preferences and differences should be celebrated, and continue to be analyzed to death. It's a lot more fun than if we were to all agree.

Let the fun continue....I love debating too!
If straight line performance is what you're looking for, of course bigger is better, but that's not what Porsche is all about. I would have to agree that the larger engine does supply a better marketing appeal factor and more total power potential for down the road. Since Porsche made the 4.5 liter twin turbo V-8 for the Cayeene, why not put it in the Turbo in the future. When they do put the 4.5 TT into the Carrera Turbo, it will probably be the exact thing out of the Cayeene. If you were compare this engine to the current GT2 the specs are pretty equal , except for a slight increase in low-end torque on the 4.5 TT, so far more hp is far from the truth. Since the engine will undoubtedly be heavier this will probably effect handling in a negative way. Porsche will have to improve handling to match and exceed the 2002 Turbo since they're not just all about straight line performance. Later

Displacement
"AH TORQUE" He sighed wistfully as a distant look drifted into his eyes. "The thing I miss about my Lingenfelter LT4 caprice. All 420 lbft of it."
What he doesn't miss? The two 80 lb sand bags in the trunk and the pool his ex and son have about will daddy make it up the drive way when it snows. Not to mention the over under on how far he will make it, if only part way. And the tie breaker, how many tries before he walks up.
And then there is the idol of his youth. Or is that idle. The sound of a healthy engine as it divides 360 degrees of crank rotation into eight equal parts. Straight or Vee, eight is a magic number!

Wow some good stuff in this post. I personally think that the stuff you guys are talking about is a lot like people with motorcycles. Some people enjoy winding a little kx250 up as high as it will go and blasting down some wicked terrain. Others like the feel of a gsx-r 750 with SRAD. I personally like the idea of being able to take a little motor which has the acceleration of a rubberbad and making it just as fast if not faster than the ZZ-4 crate motor i have in my 1969 camaro. Why do they make cruiser bikes, why do they have big blocks, who cares about a motor with less displacement than a jug of coca cola. I say screw it and just make whatever you have as fast as it can go and support others who do the same. Long live hemi's, vtec, and whatever else people continue to make fast.
On a side not i just want to thank all of my fellow i-clubbers for the endless amounts of information you so happily provide about some of the funnest cars on the planet to drive!!!
Peace, love and Speed

I was being sarcastic. Porche has beaten alot of cars on 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Hence finding the replacement (or alternative BAN) for displacement.
Its like someone forgot to mention to spudweb that guys who are 5' 8" can't dunk.
The torque thing didn't have anything to do with the Porche comment.

my friend has a 65 mustang that has 300hp+ and an incredibly loud exhaust (it sets off nearby car alarms when he starts it up) and i think that it is awesome. i am getting my wrx soon and when im done modding it it will have the same kind of power. it doesn't have a rumbling exhaust but i like the refined patter of a 4 cylinder engine almost as much as the roar of a huge v8 pounding away. oh yeah, the wrx can TURN! woo

You guys are cool. I'm a domestic guy and of course, I'd rather have that RWD V8 than any four-banger, but it's cool to work on both, as long as it's done tastefully!
The only thing I can't get past is the horrible sound of a four cylinder's exhaust note. It's just...icky. The Subaru Boxer engines are noticeably different, but still...not my bag of tea.
The rumble and roar is where it's at!
Even so, cars like the WRX are cool. Nice to see intelligent import enthusiasts, rather than the usual ricer bull**** I see everyday.

what dont you like about a bunch of bees in a tin can? i personaly dont think a 4 cyl exhaust sounds bad until you put on a muffler thats 3in in diameter. thats me though.
i love the way the wrx sounds with a good exhaust starts really sounding mean alot like a porche. right now its my favorite followed by mustangs very distinct exhaust and then believe it or not...the eurosporrt lumina from around mid 90s
ohhh and just so you dont get spoiled my brothers friends cousins sisters boyfriends step dad has a civic that will plant any v8 firmly in the ground and my integra could do the same thing if i had a little money like ....que dr evil.....1 million dollars!
