Double clutching is used to match revs when you downshift. Think about it this way. When you change gears your engine will be spinning at a different speed than the gear in the transmission. The job of a syncro is to bring match the gear speed to the engine speed so that they will mesh properly. When you double clutch a downshift (lift of gas, clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, blip throttle, clutch in, put in lower gear, clutch out) you are helping to match the revs which helps in turn takes away from the work the syncro has to do. This is what removes the wear from the syncro. By blipping the throttle you will notice that the car slides into a lower gear easier because it takes less time for the syncro to match the revs.

Wow, lots of misunderstanding of double-clutching. IcemanSS454 explained it very well.
jcorrao, you've got it backwards. I know it can work, as I've done it, but physically it's not a good method of braking. You should be using the ball of your foot on the brake and the side of your foot on the gas.
When you brake with your heel, you are using the large muscles in your hip, thigh and knee to modulate the brakes. While these muscles are great for lifting you up out of a chair, they are not very good at fine motor control, meaning they are not the ideal choice for the finesse required for threshold braking. The smaller muscles in your ankle and the way your foot is attached to your lower leg allows significantly better control of brake line pressure, meaning you will be able to get to threshold braking quicker and maintain it easier.

i have never herd of heel toe for upsifts like stated above but i heel toe quite often with my car if comming in to hot to a corner also heel toe isnt always for shifting if your car is front wheel only you can keep it in gear on the gas and brake and the front wheels will pull it through the turn and the back wheels will slow it down however if you do it like this dont expect to have a good life span on your tranny if you have a awd this can not be considered the best way to learn is in a parking lot do the same turn over and over soon the technique will become instinct

Alright!!
Does anyone in here actually race or do the Heel-toe technique because there are so many different stories. I personally race in SCCA Solo's and I Heel-toe and Blip Down-Shift everytime I drive. Like they say Practice makes Better!!
Heel-toe
Toe is on the Brake for better brake control and heel is on the gas to blip it.
3rd to 2nd Heel-toe shifts:
3rd gear, clutch in--modulate brake--blip throttle--shift to 2nd, clutch out, modulate braking accordingly then throttle in accordingly. Listed there are only 4 things but you also have to know what speed you at and what rev matches you speed.
Blip Down-shifting
If your in 4th and want to downshift to 3rd:
4th gear, Clutch in--blip throttle--shift to 3rd, clutch out, floor it.
I dont use the proper double clutch because its a wast of .3 seconds. With all the talk of the syncros and stuff you can talk to a mechanic about the importance of HT and Blip-DS on the tranny exactly. I do know with a proper HT and BDS the car is alot smoother and doesnt "buck"
just my .02

Yes, I've actually raced a time or two. Watch SpeedTV at 9:00am pacific on May 30th.

I double-clutch on my downshifts. I wouldn't do it if I thought it was slower around the racetrack.
