Car Info: 2002 WRX Stage 2 upgrade and Formula Ford
Max WRX speed
I look at my tach and 70mph at about 3K rpm. This makes a rough est of top speed 160mph+. Has anyone seen info on how close we could come to this(maybe you know someone who tried) with a stage 2 moded rex.

STi or WRX, if so, I believe the standard WRX is aero limited to 145, meaning without the limiter the engine doesn't have the power to overcome the air resistance beyond 145. There was a thread about someone getting pulled over doing 145 and some discussion as to whether this was possible, etc. IIRC the limiter is set to 140.

no limiter on the wrx. *maybe* on the 2005, but before 05 theres no limiter im positive. i doubt even the 05 has one. they're drag limited to ~143 mph.

An article in Motor Trend in 2002 stated that the top speed of the WRX was computer limited to 130 mph. Personally, I have hit 120+ and it was still climbing (I ran out of road I could trust to be traffic-free) so I cannot be totally certain. Mine has no mods.
Has anyone tried to top one out on IS 80 in the desert?

Correction: The article was in Road and Track, not Motor Trend. It listed these speeds/gears:
1st 36 mph @7K rpm
2nd 64 ""
3rd 91 " "
4th 128 " "
5th 130 (est) @ 5420K rpm [electronically limited]
So, what use is 5th for top speed? 2 mph! There must be a way to remap that part of the ECU to allow the car to go til it won't no more.

Top speed!
Well I dont know about being limited or anything of that nature but I personally have pinned my speedometer. I wasnt limited to road cause I was on route 3 in Jersey. The only other thing that would have stopped me were cops but I was sorta street racing and didnt really think of that at the time. (I dont condone this one bit) One of those little mercedes hatch backs were next to me. We were even and he was not letting me get ahead. I didnt want to go and I guess he didnt want to pass, as the left lane is the passing lane. So I inched up just to get alittle ahead and noticed that he did the same. Well long story short, those litttle things are pertty fast supercharged and wont give up or fall behind until 5th gear on the rex which blows it away. WHEN I finally pulled far ahead of him my cousin who was sitting next to me screamed like a girl and said dude dont look at your speedometer so I naturally did and saw it pinned. It was the dumbest thing i have ever done but I guess it answers the question if the wrx does at least 140. Oh just room for thought I was doing 140 at 5k and it was still climbing.
Happy motoring

My WRX is a first edition 2002 wagon, just like it came off the show room floor. The Road and Track article came with the owner's manual, and all that jazz. How correct was it? That's my question. I am reasonalbly certain the gear/speeds @7Krpm are close enough. I have never fully trusted speedometers: I have pegged a few, and never felt like they were all that accurate. The tachometer is likely better, but it's hard to read when you're busy shifting, etc. Maybe I need a gadget like one I have seen on Speed Channel that allows you to set a shift light. ps: do those things work? Seems to do a lot for $200.
