Lack of low end torque for climbing hills in WRX

I am having a hell of a time getting up hills and parking lot ramps which are at a
45 degree angle...

Seems the car doesn't have any power when you gotta go from a standstill...

All that happens when I rev to 3-4K RPM is it smokes the clutch which I don't like doing of course..... I understand turbo thows tons of torque in at 3K.. don't need turbo power to climb a hill...

Any suggestions to this issue?

Had more power in same situation in my Miata!

Sure every WRX owner knows what I mean.

I find that slipping the clutch at 2 grand is sufficient for anything I've encountered in San Francisco. Make sure your A/C is off, too.

ya, a/c off..

it's like it's a dead whale..... having drivin stick shift cars for over 20 years, I don't get
it... if this sounds strange and new to other WRX owners, maybe should have it checked and see if the clutch is slipping or something in the tranny..

thanks for feedback. You guys have some steep hills in that city...

45 degree? i don't think 45 degree inclines are part of public road regulations. i always thought 15 degrees was max on any public road/ramp.

45 degree roads def. exist. I go to SF sometimes with the rex and it's a pain in the butt. It's not just starting... We probably won't wheel spin off an up-hill start. Only time that has happened to me was when i was in a china town parking lot. If anything WRXs have trouble getting up hills. Man i occasionally wish i had a V8.

*use the handbrake if you're having trouble*

ok, 45 deg. is an exageration... just a steep incline of say an underground parking lot..

the car doesn't seem to like to go up any type of hills period from a stand still..

will have to use the parking brake since it doesn't make much power and is close to stalling... useful when people are behind u... (don't want to roll)

hate reving it past 3k since I can smell the organic disc being fried.

Can't just put in first, rev to 2-3k and pop it... engine stalls.

Try slipping the clutch at 2 grand. It's not going to burn the clutch much, but it is tricky to keep the rpm's up. I park in an underground lot every day.

i solved this problem by not taking my car to SF if i can avoid it. it rediculous trying to get up some hills. i heard somewhere that M/T Foresters and Outbacks have a hill holding clutch but imprezas do not, i wonder why that is.

exactly, you let it go, and once the clutch is out, and you can even floor it, and it doesn't respond worth a damn... I don't get it... 227hp.... I am talkin about an exit ramp to street at Amoeba records on Sunset blvd. to be exact.

Old Miata 116hp, and I can get wheelspin in 2nd gear on level street, and wheelspin in 1st up hill from standstill... but no ltd slip. maybe that is part of equation... never had ltd. slip rear..

I live in SF, in about the most hilly parts. Two things: use the handbrake - once the clutch is in in first it will go up a 45 incline at about 2k rpm - don't get it out of first. Also I am starting to use heel/toe instead on parking break - but that is taking some practice.

Additionally you may want to mod you wrx a little to gain some low-end torque.
Exhaust and chip is supposta make it more drivable in hilly conditions...

227 *peak* hp. Basically, HP = torque multiplied by rpm. The torque curve over various rev ranges is a different story all together. NA engines generally make more torque on the low end than turbo gas engines. Your Miata was also very light.

ya, I was kidding a bit... the #24 car made 104hp at the wheels... and was as light as SM rules permitted.

but still, pull off the turbo, and you've got at least 160hp+ but gearing, weight etc. is obviously different...

think the h/b or h/t solution should make thing easier. That was the Only drawback I have found so far with car as far as drivability.... added some azeni's and it sticks like glue... rally-X was fun too...

Maybe it's just me, but I work in San Francisco, and except when parallel parking with cars close behind me, I have no issues driving on the hills...the car feels like it is running well otherwise?

yep, just fine otw.... only out of norm performance was uphill driving from standstill..
guess it's just a different type of beast than any other car I have driven... which
is a good thing since I love the car's over-all performance etc.

Thanks everyone for feedback and will try some suggestions out.
