TO minimize the jerking... try easing off the clutch a lot SLOWER... my guess is once you feel youve caught the gear, you are just releasing the clutch... do it slower, even when its moving... youll find that easing off the clutch even while the cars in motion will minimize the drivetrain shock...


Think about it this way... would you rather buy a new tranny? or a new clutch?

Simple enough... let the clutch take the beating, NOT the tranny/drivetrain... use more clutch... and when youre in the next gear, SLOWLY come off the clutch, get going and while youre going... ease off gently and slowly...

I brought him out today and he got much better. He is still slipping it a little bit, but he was able to get down simple rev matching, and learning where his clutch bite was, etc. He's on the road to victory. Sure but steady.

I took it out for a drive today and I am fairly confident in my stick shift abilities now. I was really just overanalyzing everything. It will still take a couple of weeks for it to become second nature but for now i am doing just fine with my brand new BABY!

The bad news is that the pictures are on hold until i find someone to sex up for their digital camera but i promise you soon!

i had to relearn how to use a clutch when I went 6 years with autos, my problem was I got my wrx in the mid west durning winter.

Learning stick in the snow is an experance all of it's own.

Haha. The first time I ever drove a stick was in a BMW Z8. 400HP and 370+ lb's of torque. Yea ummm I don't think that I could have stalled it if I tried .

i taught my girlfriend stick on the RS and she didn't stall ONCE the whole first day! she started in first from a stop at least a dozen times, and never stalled. i was jealous

just keep at it. nothing terrible will happen if you just teach yourself on your car. just keep driving it, you just need practice. don't do anything stupid(like sidestep or kick the clutch), but as long as you just practice and try to get better, it will be fine. you might have to get a new clutch at 50k rather than 70, or 20k rather than 50(depending on your driving style) but it really isn't a big deal. just work on getting smoother.

Funny, same with my Fiancee. I was teaching her how to drive stick and she only stalled the first time she shifted into 1st gear. I was very impressed. I wish my first experience with a manual transmission was that smooth.

Driving stick is definetly something that takes time/effort to get comfortable with. Just keep on driving and concentrate on keeping everything smooth, especially shifting and clutch work. Keep at it!!

i learned how to drive stick in San Francisco with an '87 RX7. My dad said the only way to learn how to drive stick is in a big city environment. After a parking lot of course!!!!! Good luck.

I taught my girlfriend on my civic with GSR, 4puck ACT clutch and extreme pressure plate, she stalled maybe twice, and is now just as good as I am with her STi

Go to a large parking lot and find the friction point of your clutch. Slowly lift off the clutch w/o any gas until the car starts moving. That is the point where your clutch starts to catch. You should be able to lift completely off the clutch once the car starts going. Then try shifting it to second still w/o gas. Once you get used to finding the friction point you'll be able to drive a lot easier. Also the key to driving smoothly is to release the clutch slowly. Keep practicing and have fun.

Juice all it takes is practice.Instead of whining about it here go out and do something about it, practice, practice, practice and soon you will get it

on a flat surface:
step 1: press on clutch
Step 2: pop tranny into 1st gear
step 3: slowly release the clutch until you feel the car move forward
step 4: once car is moving, apply a little gas with your right foot and slowly release the clutch with your left foot.
step 5: once car is moving over 2-3 mph, you should be able to fully release the clutch and drive with your right foot
**the most important rule is that car should not be in gear when the car is completely still (this will result in a stall)**

If practicing to drive manual on a flat surface is still hard, try driving it DOWNHILL (make sure you and your car is facing DOWN the hill) ...this should give you a better feel/idea of how a car's engine, tranny, and clutch works.....

and if downhill doesn't work, try this:

instead of riding the clutch (that is when you gas the car, while you're still stepping half way into the clutch).....1)clutch, 2)1st gear,3) rev rev with your right foot on the gas (not high rpm), and 4)slowly release the clutch until the car move...once the car is moving, you can fully release the clutch...
