I just got my 05 STi and I didn't consider the EVO for very long. Reliability was a big issue for me. Mitsus in general have poor build quality and cheap interiorsa dn I don't think too many people will argue that. The EVO pulls better track times I hear. They now come with a 10yr/10k mile drivetrain warranty too but it's only for the original owner. But I don't know how valuable that is if Mitsus not going to be around in a few years. They're not doing so great these days. But like you said, you can get one for a lot cheaper.

I like the 6speed of my STi and interior. But all in all, its a matter of preference.

Go with subaru because of rich rally history that comes with buying the sti, who in the hell would want to be seen driving a mitsubishi when you could see one in the form of a big screen tv in your living room.

Actually mitsus are easier to work on re: engine stuff. 2 cams instead of 4, you can pull the head without pulling the cams, the plugs/wire take 5 minutes to change. exhaust manifold? 20 minutes.

Tranny stuff, Subaru seems to be easier. Subes don't have a xfer case, for one.

Mitsu has just as rich (if not richer) a rally history as Subaru. Even before the EVO/WRX rivalry was the Legacy/Galant rivalry.

Not only did Mitsu do WRC, but they're Pajeros have been contenders in Dakar Rally for ages.

Get a Subaru if you want more base power/torque.
Get a Mitsu if you want a better handling/more balanced car.

And if you're gonna get really real, you can't compare an STI and an Evo. You need to compare the STI to the EVO MR. Evo can be had for a few thousand less than an STI, I've had friends who got Evos for 27k or so.

hey evo VIII i have been a dedicated mitsu man since my first car, a 91 eclipse gsx, i have owned two gsx, one gst, and one gvr4. when the evo first came over i was let down by the lack of acitve diffs, 6 speed, and active yaw control i had been dreaming of an evo for years, it one upped a wrx but fell short of its over seas bretheren, i was very unhappy. Then the sti came out which was slightly "better" than the evo,(active diff, Front limited slip, 6 speed, .5 liter) i thought well i guess im going to be a suby owner instead. Thankfully Mitsu came through with the MR, as soon as they add SAYC im in, im glad i didn't need to deflect to the dark side, mitsu power forever.
