With the older EVO's(not sure of the newer versions) having forged pistons and roller rockers...with a beefier tranny and being able to boost 22 psi on a stock head gasket/fuel system...I'd say the EVO is a better car.
This is NOT fiction. I have actually sat in the driver's seat of this car. Took 5 YEARS of hard driving to blow the engine(EVO II)

I am lucky enough to have a friend who works at a local dealership and he hooked me up with a test drive in the STi!! Amazing amazing...thats all I could say, and then my friend gave me a ride in his EVO...oh man.
My opinion on the STi: Very impressed with the built in features like the variable differential (you can set it wherever you want it!), the stock shift light thing is really cool too, you can set it to go off at whatever RPM you want it too. As far as power the STi has GREAT tq. but seems to taper off too much on the top end. I got to throw it around in the corners a bit at around 60 and its just amazing compared to the WRX, and totally unbelievable compared to any other car.
EVO: I am super impressed that my friends EVO is boosting 20 pounds on his stuck turbo (he has an AFC and an intake, 3" turboback this friday). The car handles like a dream and the power is as great as the STi. I kinda like the looks of the EVO over the STi as well. The seats are very very nice and it comes with a radio! I love this car.
Overall they are both excellent, if I had to pick I would go with the EVO, I guess I am just somewhat partial to the 4g63 because I loved my DSM so much. The STi definately has more cool features though if you like that sort of thing.

I'm just glad I'm too poor right now to have to make a choice. Who knows what I'll do in a few years (well after college) though.
