Drifiting in AWD
First of all to those who have never drifted in AWD, it is really possible and when you feel it you will understand that the more you do it the better you get. How many people here ride motorcycles? A few I percieve, when you approach a corner in a motorcycle you in advertantly steer the motorcycle in the opposite direction for just a moment to begin the lean into the inside of the correct corner. In drifting you do the same with any vehicle 2WD or AWD you steer into the outside corner so you can then swing the steering in a snap motion to direct into the inside corner. Affectively beginning the drift, but you must understand that you never let off the gas pedal, In the beginning of the manuever you need to modulate the gas pedal a bit to start the tail end of the Vehicle to sway back and forth. As soon as the vehicle is aligned to go around the bend of sorts you want to practice mashing on the pedal to see how much you need to maintain the drift. The drifting is all in the amount of pressure you place on your gas pedal. In other words it is getting to know your vehicle like you have never known it before. This drifitng is not something that will just happen you must practice at it relentlessly. Perfection in your abilities is only improved with time and continued practice.
In Central PA there are State Forest Roads as there are many in the USA, the practice to slide your vehicle should start on a road surface that is NOT paved and work your self onto the road surface after many tries. This practice can be seen watching Pro Rally drivers turn into there corners they will wag there cars left to right, right before they enter a corner. But even before they are in the apex of the corner they are hard on the gas pedal and excelerating.
To romance this perception of drifting you must become one with your vehicle.

Wet pavement works well but if you pick a parking lot to try your hand at drifting I suggest trying your fanatic manuevers when there is no one around even those pesky rent a cops! Street Lamps or Lamp Posts that have a concrete base do not move when you bump into them, damage to your car and your ego will be painful, I have learned this from experience.

A FWD beater is a good idea for learning to drift. I currently drive a cavalier (yea yea I know leave me alone =P hoping to get a subbie soon though) and I can do drifts pretty good. The best part about the FWD is if you hammer the gas you can come out of it easier if needed. Because its FWD I found that the e-brake works great. Thats just me though =P I've only test drove a WRX so I dont know how it would work in a AWD car.

There is quite a difference in the way the car acts from the FWD to the AWD it is like standing on one leg, and then standing with both legs. Your strengths with at least the feeling you are attempting will be there once you get the AWD to do the same, you will know it. The feeling will be when you can accelerate farther before the apex of the corner then you do now with the FWD. Steering is everything as when you are mashing on the pedal you need to steer the vehicle in the desired direction you want to go. Watching someone else do it before you attmept it is best, that is why I suggested watching Pro Rally drivers as they enter and exit the corners. Keep the questions coming....

i hope the next thing to come from japan is "DONT DRIVE YOUR CAR" i wonder if everyone will do that to. no offense to all the enthusiasts. heck, im one of them but the moment someone does something everyone else has to catch on to it cause its "cool"
Yes i caught on to drifting and started doing it 4 years ago, but all my friends were telling me i was stupid for doing it and they thought it was dumb, isnt that funny because 2-3years later, there telling me hey! on my way home today i did this bas *** drift you should have seen it! and there whole life is about drifting now and becoming the drift master (ok im exagerating a bit.. but sometimes you see things that way.. and no, my friends arent that bad ) but theyre talking about getting into drift competitions and yet in my 4 years ive never joined one ( i guess cause thats just me i dont care for that stuff, i just do it for the fun of it) ..
Anywho, what i see in America is so many ppl catch on to things.. and then just let go cause its not cool. its like that each time. right now drifting is the coolest thing in the u.s. (in just two short years its been commercialized and even your neibhor with the Dodge Caravan is talkin about doing it) but just because the hype got so big so quick this scene is gonna die out quicker then it started or until "DONT DRIVE YOUR CAR" is the next big thing leaving the true enthusiasts in the sport.
Some of you may agree and some of you dont but that's what sets apart other countries such as Japan.. drifting is a national sport there yet it is more underground there then here.. isnt that funny? America comercializes things for profit and not for the sport and dont even think of respect. sure its good to make profit, but shouldnt there be a limit to that. I'm sorry if this didn't have much to do with the thread but i had to get it out of my system
I am not pointing fingers at anyone i am speaking of this in general.
