(cost-efficient to mod) WRX to match EVO VIII?
OK, don't really know what forum to post this in so I figured general is as good a place as any. I am wondering what it would take to get my 2004 WRX to be on par with a 2003 EVO VIII. On par I am not talking about just power, I want to whole package power, handling, braking, etc. I would like to know if it is possible to do it for equal to or less than the differences in price (figure 25k for a WRX and about 30k for an EVO so 5k total for mods). I would like to keep the car street legal (ie cats are a must), and be as friendly a daily driver as a stock EVO 8. I believe it is possible. Any ideas? Please feel free to discuss.

I don't think is possible. Just Tbe and wheels and tires your probably looking at 2k and thats cheap. F/R swaybars, $300, springs/coilovers any where from 300 to 2k. Engine management between 500 and 1k. Brake upgrade 300-3k. These prices are a pretty wide range. It gives you some idea though. Also just engine management alone will proably not do it. Maybe a bigger turbo. It's a good car. That's why Subaru made the STi. There are many more differences too. A lot to list. Being a good driver helps too. It would be just like making your WRX keep up with an STi. For 5 k no way. I have an 04' too and it's a great car but for me to perform right with an STi i'll need about 3-10k worth of mods and i still only have 5 gears, if you get my drift.

swap an sti engine, tranny and suspension into the car. then you are pretty darn close. wait that's a just a nudge over $5,000.....D'oh!
good luck with the project man, but the main rival of the evo is the sti. hope you got lots of money.

This isn't about the EvoVIII, but this might interest you...
There's an .mpg floating around from Best Motoring where they compared the generations of the Evo to the generations of the Impreza (no 04's or EvoVIII, unfortunately).
The car that was actually the one to imitate was the Impreza Spec-C.
They explain that what makes the Impreza such a great car, besides speed, is it's handling. The Impreza was engineered with a symmetrical design. Everything in the car is balanced so well that there is no need for a computer to regulate the handling characteristics.
The Evo's all use a computer to balance it out, and while racing, the drivers comment on the lack of raw control (though they all say the cars drive fantastic). One Evo driver actually screams out, "C'mon computer! Turn this car around!"
So, what I'm saying, it's best to upgrade a WRX to that of the higher end Imprezas. But be careful what you do, because the Imprezas are touchy...that's even mentioned in the video as they tried to upgrade a GDB model to the Spec-C .
It's a good video (349meg download).

I'm not sure as to why you didn't just get a STi... The STi is considered in many respects to be VERY similar to the Evo III in power and perfomance. Infact, many experts have difficulty deciding on which they prefer. Unless you're trying to keep insurance costs low, I don't see the point in trying to get the WRX to be as powerful as an Evo III or STi.

you should switch insurance companies. or plan on spending 8 to 10 grand. In an issue of sports compact mag. the vishnu wrx that beat the Sti cost 33,000 do the math. (I had an ESX stage 4 WRX 02 and it still was not the car the Sti was so I brought a STi)
